Devils Top Alvernia, 82-70, In Stevens Tourney Consolation Game

HOBOKEN, NJ - Junior guard Shaleah Alston finished with 19 points, six rebounds and six assists, freshman guard Brianna Nicholls tallied 11 points, 11 rebounds and six assists junior center Meghan Lentine added 15 points and four rebounds off the bench to lead the College at Florham Devils to an 82-70 win over Alvernia in the Consolation Game of the Stevens Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Devils improved to 3-1 while the Crusaders dropped to 1-2.

With the game tied at 8-8 and just under five minutes gone by in the first half, FDU went on a 27-10 run to grab a 35-18 lead with 5:49 to go thanks to points from seven different players.  Alvernia responded with a run of their own to cut the Devils advantage to 40-36 with 0:10 left in the half but junior forward Matil Mangual hit a short jumper with time running out to give FDU a 42-36 halftime lead.

Alvernia continued their strong play as they took a 50-49 lead with 14:00 left in the contest.  That's when the Devils really turned it on though, going on an 18-7 run over the next seven minutes to take a 67-57 lead thanks to six points apiece from Lentine and senior forward Shealyn Taggart.  After Alvernia cut it to 67-61 with 6:28 to go, FDU iced the game with a 15-6 run to take an 82-67 lead 0:07 remaining.  In the game-clinching run, the Devils had six players score to continue the balance they had for the entire game.

With her big game, Alston was named to the All-Tournament Team.  Of the nine players FDU played in the game, eight had scored at least five points or more.

The Devils return to action on Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at home against John Jay beginning at 5 pm.
