Strong Second Half Gives Rutgers-Newark 83-71 Win Over FDU

NEWARK, NJ - Leading 37-35 at halftime, Rutgers-Newark opened the second half with a 17-4 run to take a 54-39 lead on their way to an 83-71 victory over the College at Florham Devils in the Championship Game of the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic on Saturday afternoon.  Junior guard Adam Katz scored a game-high 22 points and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 1-2 while the Scarlet Raiders improved to 3-0.

With Newark holding an 18-8 lead and 13:12 to play in the first half, the Devils went on a 7-0 run to close to 18-17 before the Raiders opened up a seven point lead, 30-23, with 4:14 remaining.  FDU then went on a 12-3 run to grab a 35-33 lead with 1:49 to go in the half thanks to points from five different players.  Newark came right back though, and took a 37-35 advantage into the locker room.

The Scarlet Raiders started strong in the second half, going on the 17-4 run to take a 54-39 lead with 13:21 left in the game.  Down 63-48 with 8:21 to go, FDU went on a 14-4 run over the next four minutes to pull to within 67-62 thanks to seven points apiece from Katz and freshman forward Will Green.  Newark regrouped though, and got their lead back to nine, 75-66, with 1:11 remaining.  That was as close as the Devils would get however, as the Raiders nailed their free throws down the stretch to earn the tournament championship.

Green finished with 15 points and six rebounds off the bench while senior center Ricky Fetske added 13 points and eight rebounds.  Freshman guard Trevor Sykes tallied 11 points.

The Devils return to action on Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at home against Stevens beginning at 7 pm.
