ST. DAVIDS, PA - The third-seeded College at Florham Devils dropped a 2-1 (OT) decision to second-seeded Eastern on Tuesday afternoon in the Semifinals of the Freedom Conference Tournament.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 10-8-1 while the Eagles improved to 12-5-1. FDU will now wait for a bid to the ECAC Metro Region Tournament while Eastern will advance to the Freedom Conference Tournament Championship Game against top-seeded DeSales.
After a scoreless first half, Eastern got on the board first just 6:55 into the second half when the Devils knocked the ball into their own net for an own goal. FDU battled back though and tied the game at 1-1 at the 75:31 mark when sophomore midfielder
Nick Maccarrone (Garfield, NJ/Paramus Catholic) found the back of the goal. The game remained tight down the stretch with each team having an opportunity to net the game-winner but neither could and the contest went to overtime. Senior midfielder
Phil Mantua (Laurel, MD/Good Counsel) played the hero for Eastern just 3:00 into the extra session when he was fouled in the box and converted a penalty kick to send the Eagles to the title game.
Senior goalkeeper
Kevin Herbert (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) suffered the loss for FDU, making five saves.
