MADISON, NJ - Junior running back
Josan Holmes (Penllyn, PA/ Wissahickon) rushed 20 times for 105 yards and three touchdowns to lead Albright to a 41-15 victory over the College at Florham Devils in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 3-5 (0-5 MAC) while the Lions improved to 5-3 (3-2 MAC).
Albright got the ball first but on their first play from scrimmage, sophomore quarterback
Adam Galczynski (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown Area) was intercepted by junior linebacker
Steve Hoverson (Middletown, NJ/Middletown North) at the Albright 35 yard line. The Devils though, could only move the ball two yards and turned the ball over on downs. The Lions pushed the ball out to the FDU 41 where they faced a third-and-one. That's when Holmes raced 41 yards for a touchdown to give Albright a 7-0 lead with 10:58 left in the first quarter. FDU had the ball three more times in the first quarter and moved into Albright territory all three times, including down to the 15 yard line once, but the Devils couldn't come away with any points and the Lions led 7-0 after one.
The Lions had the ball to begin the second quarter and went 75 yards in nine plays to take a 14-0 lead on a six-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back
Ty Hughes (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) with 10:53 left in the first half. FDU got some of those points back on their next possession when eight straight running plays took the ball from the FDU 38 to the Albright six yard line. Sophomore kicker
Travis Mullen (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake) came on and nailed a 23-yard field goal to make it 14-3 in favor of Albright with 5:24 remaining. Alrbight then responded with a six-play, 61 yard drive to grab a 21-3 advantage on a five-yard touchdown run by Galczynski with 2:31 to go. After a 29-yard kickoff return by senior running back
Bayshawn Wells (Lawrence, NJ/Lawrence) out to the FDU 41 yard line, senior quarterback
Matt Jeffers (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) hit sophomore wide receiver
Doug Van Orden (Madison, NJ/Madison) for 20 yards on first down to the Albright 39. A late hit out of bounds on the Lions gave FDU another 15 yards and moved the ball to the Albright 24 yard line. On the very next play, Jeffers connected with sophomore wide receiver
Jon Bennett (Howell, NJ/Freehold Twp.) for a 24-yard touchdown to cut the FDU deficit to 21-9 with 1:58 left. The extra point however, was blocked and Alrbight ran out the rest of the clock to take that 21-9 lead into intermission.
FDU started with the ball in third quarter and drove down to the Albright 21 yard line, but Mullen missed a 38-yard field goal that would have made the score 21-12. The Lions moved the ball out to their own 47 yard line but Galczynski was picked off by sophomore safety
Shane Roland (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan), giving the Devil offense great field position at their own 47. Jeffers completed three passes for 38 yards in the first four plays of the series to set FDU up on the Albright 25 yard line. After a one-yard gain by Wells and a nine-yard rush by Jeffers gave the Devils another first down, Jeffers again hooked up with Bennett, this time for a 15-yard touchdown to pull FDU to within 21-15 with 3:11 left in the third quarter. The extra point was once again off, keeping FDU six points behind.
Albright had the ball at the end of the third quarter and carried it over to start the fourth as they embarked on a 10-play, 70 yard drive that was capped by a one-yard touchdown run by Holmes to give the Lions a 27-15 lead with 13:04 left in the game. The Lions went for the two-point conversion but Galczynski was sacked on the play. Albright really put the game out of reach on their next series when they started with excellent field position after Jeffers was sacked and fumbled on the FDU 30 yard line. After a myriad of penalites, Holmes punched it in from seven yards out to give the Lions a 34-15 lead with 7:32 remaining. Albright added one more touchdown for good measure when freshman quarterback
TJ Luddy (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) hit junior wide receiver
Sean Caldwell (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) for a 17-yard touchdown with 0:35 to go in the game.
Senior running back
Brendon Griffin (Riverside, NJ/Riverside) had maybe his finest game as a Devil, carrying 18 times for 108 yards. Jeffers finished 11-of-22 for 142 yards to go along with two touchdowns and one interception. He also ran nine times for 33 yards. Wells rushed nine time for 45 yards, Van Orden made four catches for 52 yards, and Bennett notched three grabs for 49 yards and two scores. Defensively, Hoverson was all over the field as he made seven tackles, two for loss, to go along with a sack, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Sophomore linebacker
Charles Thomas (Tuckerton, NJ/Pinelands Regional) made a game-high 11 tackles while sophomore safety
Joe Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) had eight tackles and an interception.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, November 6, 2010, at King's beginning at 1 pm.
