Paige Carlin and Megan Rigous scored 13 points each as the King's College women's basketball team posted a big 51-40 Freedom Conference victory over visiting FDU-Florham Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, King's improved to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in league play. In the process, the Lady Monarchs handed the Devils their first conference defeat as FDU slipped to 7-6 and 2-1 in Freedom Conference games.
King's built an early 10-point lead when Rigous sparked a 6-0 spurt with a traditional three-point play. An Abby Malloy jumper pushed the advantage to 16-6 with 10:29 left in the first half. The Devils battled back and cut the lead to 16-15 following a layup by Danielle Michlovsky but the Lady Monarchs used one-of-two foul shots from Julianna Lynott and a bucket down low from Rigous to stretch the lead to 19-15 with 5:54 on the clock. After Micholvsky scored again to cut the lead to 19-17 with 4:03 to play, King's closed out the half with a 4-2 spurt to take a 23-19 lead into the break.
In the second half the Lady Monarchs extended the lead to nine points thanks to three-pointers from Malloy and Lindsay Atchison to build a 31-22 advantage with 13:13 to play. FDU would close to within 33-31 on a jumper by Alex Katz with 9:05 to play to cap a 9-2 Devil run. King's remained poised, however, and countered with a three-point play by Lynott and a pair of foul shots from Carlin to push the lead back up to 38-32 with 6:10 remaining.
The Devils managed to cut the lead to four points when a layup by Matil Mangual with 3:44 on the clock cut the margin to 41-37, but three straight points from Rigous and two foul shots from Brittany Muscatell upped the Lady Monarch lead to 46-37 with 1:55 to play. Later, two foul shots from Carlin with 0:29 to play gave King's a 50-40 lead before Muscatell capped off the game with one-of-two foul shots with 0:16 on the clock as the Lady Monarchs walked away with the victory.
Carlin made four shots from the field and was 4-of-4 from the foul line while Rigous made five field goals and added 10 rebounds in the game. Muscatell tallied nine points, five assists, and four rebounds while Lynott contributed with six points and 11 rebounds. Defensively, King's harassed FDU in to a 27.7 (13-47).shooting effort while forcing 31 turnovers.
Michlovsky led the Devils with 21 points and nine rebounds while Shealyn Taggart followed with seven points and seven boards.
The Devils return to action on Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at home against Manhattanville beginning at 6 pm.
