MADISON, NJ - Despite 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds from junior center
Ricky Fetske (Galloway, NJ/Absegami), the College at Florham Devils were knocked off by Wilkes, 61-58, in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 1-17 (0-8 Freedom) while the Colonels improved to 12-7 (3-5 Freedom).
FDU started hot, jumping out to an 11-4 lead with 3:32 gone by in the first half thanks to six points from Fetske. Wilkes came back to tie the game at 15-15 with 13:02 remaining and it was 22-21 in favor of the Devils with 6:55 to go. FDU then went on a 11-6 run over the next five minutes to grab a 33-27 advantage with 1:42 to play in the half. Sophomore guard
Adam Katz (Wharton, NJ/Morris Hills) had five points during the spurt. Wilkes recorded the last points of the first stanza on an old fashioned three-point play to cut the FDU lead to 33-30 heading into the locker rooms.
The Colonels started the second half just as hot as the Devils began the first, ripping off a 19-7 run to grab a 49-40 lead with 10:19 left in the game. FDU trimmed their deficit to 51-48 after a layup by sophomore guard
Mike Williamson (Piscataway, NJ/Bishop Ahr) but Wilkes got it back up to 55-49 with 5:18 to go. The Devils cut the Wilkes lead to two points on three different occasions including to 58-56 with 0:27 to play after sophomore guard
Bobby Faiges (Bayville, NJ/Lakewood Prep) made one-of-two free throws. Wilkes came back and hit two free throws of their own with 0:26 to grab a 60-56 lead but after an empty trip by FDU, the Colonels missed two free throws with 0:09 to go. Wilkes then fouled Katz, who made two to cut it to 60-58 with 0:04 left and the Devils fouled again with 0:03 remaining. The Colonels made the first but missed the second and Katz's potential game-tying heave from half court fell short, allowing Wilkes to get the win.
Katz finished with a team-high 14 points and four assists while Williamson added 11 points off the bench. Senior forward
Andrew Biancosino (Edison, NJ/JP Stevens) notched nine points.
The Devils return to action on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at Delaware Valley beginning at 8 pm.
