Devils Lose Heartbreaker To Eastern, 86-81 (2OT)

ST. DAVIDS, PA - Trailing by two points in the final ten seconds at both the end of regulation and the first overtime, Eastern tied the game both times and pulled away in the second overtime to knock off the College at Florham Devils, 86-81, in Freedom Conference action on Wednesday evening.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 0-15 (0-6 Freedom) while the Eagles improved to 8-8 (4-2 Freedom).

Eastern jumped out to a 21-9 advantage with 12:42 left in the first half but the Devils came right back and cut it to 21-19 thanks to six points from freshman guard Alex Rosario (Bound Brook, NJ/Bound Brook).  The Eagles built their edge back up to 35-26 with 3:10 left but the Devils cut it to 35-30 at intermission.

FDU came out on fire to begin the second half, opening with a 25-12 run to take a 55-47 lead with 8:20 left in the game.  Sophomore guard Joe Missale (Blauvelt, NY/Tappan Zee) had seven points during the half-opening spurt.  Eastern rallied right back though, going on a 14-2 run to take a 61-47 lead with 3:39 to play.  A three-pointer by Rosario and layups by Missale and junior center Ricky Fetske (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) gave FDU a 64-61 lead with 0:45 to go.  Eastern sank two free throws and the Devils then hit one-of-two from the line to take a 65-63 lead with 0:22 left.  The Devils fouled on the next possession and Eastern drained two more from the line to tie the game at 65-65 with 0:10 to play.  Sophomore guard Bobby Faiges (Bayville, NJ/Lakewood Prep) got the ball and inbounds, went the length of the floor and sank a reverse layup to give FDU a 67-65 with 0:07 remaining.  Eastern however came down and hit a jumper at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

The Devils missed a layup and the front end of a one-and-one twice allowing Eastern to grab a 70-67 lead with 2:48 left in the first overtime.  Four straight free throws gave FDU a 71-70 lead with 0:58 to go and after an Eastern miss, the Devils hit one-of-two free throws to take a 72-70 advantage with 0:12 remaining.  FDU forced a bad shot by Eastern but allowed an offensive rebound and layup that let Eastern tie the game at 72-72 with 0.8 second to go.  FDU took the ball out under their own basket but the inbounds pass hit the ceiling and Eastern got the ball with a chance to win.  The Eagles got a wide open layup but missed, sending the game into double overtime.

Eastern turned to Shawn Nelson in the second overtime, and he delivered eight of the first nine Eagle points.  The Devils though hung tight and closed to within 81-79 on an old fashioned three-point play by Fetske.  After a Nelson free throw to make it 84-81 in favor of Eastern with 0:08 to go, the Devils came down and got a decent look at a game-tying three but it didn't fall and Eastern made two more free throws to escape with the win.

Fetske finished the game with 16 points and a game-high 20 rebounds while Rosario had a career-high 19 points off the bench.  Missale poured in a career-high 16 points and senior forward Andrew Biancosino (Edison, NJ/JP Stevens) had 10 points.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, January 23, 2010, at Misericordia beginning at 3 pm.
