MADISON, NJ - Senior quarterback
Bill Winters (Brick, NJ/Brick) went 17-of-32 for 249 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions through the air while gaining an additional 37 yards and another score on the ground to lead the College at Florham Devils a 49-30 win over Apprentice on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Devils improved to 1-2 while the Builders dropped to 1-3.
The Devils got the scoring started when they took over on their own 13 yard line at the 8:41 mark of the first quarter. On the first play, junior running back
Bayshawn Wells (Lawrence, NJ/Lawrence) ripped off a 62 yard run to take the ball down to the Apprentice 25 yard line. Two plays later, Winters hit sophomore wide receiver
Tim Grey (Ft. Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) for a 21-yard touchdown pass to give the Devils a 7-0 lead. The lead didn't last long though, as freshman defensive back
Anthony Duckworth (New Orleans, LA/OP Walker) returned the ensuing kickoff 83 yards to tie the game at 7-7.
FDU came right back on their next possession and went 52 yards on four plays capped by a trick play for a touchdown. Junior quarterback
Matt Jeffers (Burlington, NJ/Burlington) line up as the quarterback with Winters next to him as a running back. On the snap, Jeffers threw a pass to Winters that was behind the line of scrimmage where Winters caught it and fired it back to Jeffers who then found junior wide receiver
Andrew Scamporino (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) all alone in the end zone for a 37-yard score to put the Devils up 14-7 with 5:00 left in the first quarter. The Builders came right back again though, as they went 71 yards in five plays to tie the game at 14-14 when freshman running back
Chris Virgin (Donalsonville, GA/Seminole Co.) ripped off a 31-yard touchdown run.
Winters struck again on the first play of the second quarter, this time finding sophomore wide receiver
Ryan Cushman (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Twp.) for a 42-yard touchdown strike to give FDU a 21-14 lead. The Devils then got the ball back with 10:11 to go before halftime and went 68 yards on eight plays, aided by two personal foul penalties on Apprentice, to take a 28-14 lead on a one-yard plunge by Wells. The Builders cut it to 28-20 on their next possession as they got good field position on the kickoff, starting at the FDU 49, and senior quarterback
Phil Caralla (Tarpon Springs, FL/East Lake) hooked up with junior wide receiver
Bryan Cain (Baker, LA/Baker) for a 27-yard touchdown pass.
After the Devils went three-and-out and punted on the first series of the third quarter, Apprentice took over on their own 37 yard line. The Builders got an 18-yard run on the first play and Caralla hit freshman wide receiver
James Abbs (Stone Mountain, GA/Tucker) for a 45-yard touchdown pass on the second play to cut the deficit to 28-27. Each team had a stalled drived midway through the third quarter before the Devils took over on the Apprentice 43 yard line. Junior running back
Sean Norton (Lincoln Park, NJ/Boonton) had four carries for 25 yards on the drive and Winters ran for eight yards and then found senior tight end
Beau Reed (Ocean, NJ/Rumson) for a 10-yard scoring strike to give the Devils a 35-27 lead with 4:43 left in the quarter.
The Builders cut it to 35-30 on the first series of the fourth quarter but the Devils responded with a touchdown on their next possession when Winters ran it in from 14 yards out to put FDU ahead, 42-30 with 11:34 left in the game. After three-and-outs by both teams, senior safety
Dan Labrutto (Brick, NJ/Brick) picked off a Caralla pass to set the Devils up on the Apprentice 28 yard line. On the first play, Winters found Scamporino for a 28-yard score to seal the win for FDU.
Wells finished with 15 carries for 113 yards and a touchdown while also catching three passes for 45 yards. Scamporino caught three passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns while Reed had five receptions for 39 yards. On defense, junior defensive tackle
Kevin Horn (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) had seven tackles and a half sack while junior defensive end
George Gibson (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) had 1.5 sacks. Labrutto and senior safety
Jason Glezman (Lincroft, NJ/Mater Dei) each had an interception and junior linebacker
Ian Moore (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) recovered a fumble.
The Devils return to action on Friday, October 2, 2009, with their conference opener against Widener beginning at 7 pm.
