Buzzer Beating Three By Katz Called A Two; Devils Fall To Aggies, 73-72

MADISON, NJ - With the score tied 70-70 and 10.7 seconds left in regulation, Delaware Valley junior guard James Jones (Philadelphia, PA/Edward Bok Tech) calmly took the ball down court and drained a three-pointer from the left wing to give his team a 73-70 lead.  The College at Florham Devils inbounded the ball to sophomore guard Adam Katz (Wharton, NJ/Morris Hills) who raced back down court and hit a running, game-tying three-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer that was ruled a two to allow the Aggies to get a 73-72 win in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams on Wednesday evening.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 0-5 (0-1 Freedom) while the Aggies improved to 3-2 (1-0 Freedom).

FDU jumped out to a 9-4 lead just 4:36 into the game on their way to an 18-12 advantage with 8:39 left in the first half.  The Aggies responded by going on an 8-0 run to grab a 20-18 lead with 6:03 to go and with the score tied at 22-22, Delaware Valley ended the half on a 12-7 run to take a 34-29 lead into intermission.

The Aggies came out hot to start the second, opening up a 43-33 lead just 2:07 in.  Del Val held a 56-49 advantage with 10:40 to go when the Devils ripped off a 12-5 run over the next four minutes to tie the game at 61-61.  Five different players scored in the run for FDU.  After Jones hit two free throws, the Aggies held a 68-65 advantage with 2:25 to go but two free throws from junior center Ricky Fetske (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) and a layup by sophomore guard Joe Missale (Blauvelt, NY/Tappan Zee) sandwiched around a jumped from Jones left the score at 70-69 in favor of Del Val with 1:02 remaining.  The Devils though, only made one of four free throws down the stretch and the game was tied at 70-70 after Katz went one-for-two.  That's when Jones drained his big shot and Katz responded with his that was ruled a two, though later on the game film revealed that it was in fact a three and the game should have gone to overtime.

Katz had a game-high 23 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists while Fetske finished with 16 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.  Jones led the Aggies with 19 points.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, December 5, 2009, at Wilkes beginning at 3 pm.
