Devils Pick Up First Conference Win, 28-21, Over King's

MADISON, NJ - Junior quarterback Matt Jeffers (Burlington, NJ/Burlington) made his first career start and went 20-of-42 for 260 yards and two touchdowns to lead the College at Florham Devils to their first conference win of the season, 28-21, over King's on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Devils improved to 2-7 (1-5 MAC) while the Monarchs dropped to 2-7 (1-5 MAC).

King's got the ball to begin the game but the Devil defense forced a three-and-out, allowing the offense to start on their own 36 yard line.  Jeffers converted a third-and-12 with a 13-yard pass to senior tight end Beau Reed (Ocean, NJ/Rumson) and then on fourth-and-four from the King's 35, junior running back Brendon Griffin (Riverside, NJ/Riverside) picked up a bad snap from center and ran for 17 yards and the first down.  FDU was not able to pick up an additional first down and settle for a 29-yard field goal from freshman kicker Travis Mullen (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake) to take a 3-0 lead with 8:03 left in the first quarter.  The Devils held that lead for the remainder of the quarter but on the first play of the second quarter, King's senior quarterback Corey Lavin (Jackson, NJ/Jackson) threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Mike Verbitski (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) to give the Monarchs a 7-3 lead.

FDU came right back on their next possession though.  A face mask penalty by King's on the kickoff gave the Devils great field position on the King's 41 yard line, then Jeffers found senior wide receiver Lou Pietrangelo (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) for 18 yards on the first before the pair connected for a 23-yard score on the second play to put the Devils up 10-7 with 14:05 left in the half.  This time it was the Monarchs turn to respond as they went 60 yards on six plays on their next series to take a 14-10 lead on a nine-yard touchdown scamper by Lavin.  The Devils were then forced to punt on their next drive but King's muffed the punt at their own three yard line and then Devils recovered.  The Monarch defense really stood tall, not allowing the Devils to move the ball, and Mullen came on to boot a 20-yard field goal to cut it to 14-13 with 6:50 to go.  The Devils had a chance to add more points near the end of the half but Mullen's 42-yard attempt came up just short as King's took a 14-13 lead into the locker room.

The Devils had the ball to start the second half and Griffin ran for 21 yards before Jeffers hit senior wide receiver Kyle Bukowiec (Howell, NJ/Howell) for a 32-yard touchdown to give FDU a 19-14 lead.  The Devils then went for the two-point conversion and were successful when Jeffers found Griffin for the score.  King's came right back again though, this time marching 72 yards in 10 plays to tie the game at 21-21 with 7:06 left in the third quarter on a three-yard touchdown pass from Lavin to Verbitski.  The Devils got their lead back right away, as junior running back Bayshawn Wells (Lawrence, NJ/Lawrence) took off for a 55-yard touchdown run on the second play of the ensuing drive to put FDU up by a count of 28-21.

It looked like FDU would be able to gain more of a cushion at the end of the third quarter when they drove the ball all down to the King's five yard line where they faced a fourth-and-two to begin the fourth quarter.  The Devils decided to go for it, however Jeffers' pass to Reed was incomplete in the end zone allowing King's to take over on downs.  The Monarchs had a chance to make it a four-point game with 9:40 left in regulation but senior kicker Andrew DeRito (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) missed a 38-yard field goal.  The King's defense then forced and recovered a fumble at the FDU 31 yard line and were looking to tie the score when they faced a fourth down of their own inside the FDU 10.  Lavin tried to hit Verbitski on a fade route in the corner of the end zone but it was incomplete and the Devils kept their seven-point lead.  The Monarchs had one last shot to tie the game when FDU punted the ball away with 0:17 left in the game.  The Devil defense stood tall one last time as senior safety Dan Labrutto (Brick, NJ/Brick) intercepted a hail marry attempt to end the game.

Pietrangelo finished the game with seven catches for 86 yards and a score while Bukowiec added six grabs for 85 yards and a score.  Wells ran eight times for 67 yards and a touchdown, Griffin had 20 carries for 52 yards and Reed caught four passes for 42 yards.  On defense,  junior linebacker Ian Moore (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) had a game-high 12 tackles while sophomore linebacker Steve Hoverson (Middletown, NJ/Iona) added nine tackles.

The Devils return to action with their season finale on Saturday, November 14, 2009, at Lycoming beginning at 1 pm.
