NEWARK, NJ - Despite 16 points and nine rebounds from senior forward
Danielle Michlovsky (Wind Gap, PA/Bethlehem Catholic), the College at Florham Devils were defeated by Rutgers-Newark in the Championship Game of the John K. Adams Rutgers-Newark Tip-Off Tournament by a score of 50-45 on Monday evening.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 1-1.
The Scarlet Raiders jumped out to a 13-7 advantage with 10:21 gone by in the first half but the Devils came back with a 7-0 run to grab a 14-13 lead with 6:18 left in the first half. Newark came right back though, going on an 8-0 run to take a 21-14 advantage before heading into intermission with a 23-18 lead.
Rutgers-Newark built their lead up to 10 points, 32-22, in the first four minutes of the second half but the Devils ripped off a 9-0 run over the next five minutes to cut the deficit to 32-31 with 11:05 left in the game. The Scarlet Raiders responded immediately with a 7-0 spurt to take a 39-31 lead but FDU was not deterred as they came storming back with a 10-0 run to grab a 41-39 advantage with 3:42 to go. Michlovsky had six of the 10 points in the run. The Devils couldn't quite hold on though, as Newark got the lead back with a 10-0 run of their own to take a 49-41 lead with 0:22 remaining on their way to a 50-45 victory.
Senior guard
Courtney Young (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) finished with nine points, five rebounds and four assists while junior forward
Shealyn Taggart (Atlantic Highlands, NJ/Middletown South) added eight points and seven boards. Michlovsky and Young were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Devils return to action on Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at cross-town rival Drew beginning at 6 pm.
