CAREER WRITE-UP
Jamie Quinn entered his first season as the Head Baseball Coach at FDU- Florham for the 2019 season.
The 2022 season showed to be a successful one on and off the field, while it was the program's first full season playing at the state-of-the-art Vincent J. & Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark. In the classroom the Devils earned the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award. On the field the Devils' 22 wins were the most in a season since 2014 which culminated in an ECAC Championship, as the Devils hosted and swept Penn State-Behrend to earn their first ECAC title since 2012. Graduate student Matt Nodoro earned ECAC Championship Series Most Valuable Player. The Devils were represented well in the MAC Freedom Conference. Gr RHP Christian Capuano and Senior 3B Tommy Moore were named All-MAC Freedom First Team, Gr. OF Matt Nodoro was named All-MAC Freedom Second Team, and First-Year RHP Colby Craig was named All-MAC Freedom Honorable Mention. Capuano and Moore were both named to the ABCA All-Region Second Team and to the D3Baseball.com Third Team. This was Moore's second consecutive ABCA All-Region Second Team nod. Capuano and Moore were named to the D2Baseball.com Team of the Week; Capuano for the week of February 24 and Moore for the week of March 21.
The Devils took home some hardware at the FDU Devils athletic department awards ceremony as well. Moore was named the Robert T. Shields Male Athlete of the Year, making it the second consecutive year Moore won this award, while being at FDU for only two years. Craig was named the Bill Klika Male Rookie of the Year. Moore went on to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team accolades as well as the Academic All-MAC Team, making him the first student-athlete in program history to garner both of these honors. He finished his illustrious Devils career with All-ECAC First Team honors, in which his 20 home runs rank him second all time in the program.
Records are made to be broken. The career record for walks and single season records in strikeouts, saves, and home runs were re-written in 2022. Nodoro broke the career walks record of 86 with 97. For the single season records, Capuano broke the strikeouts record with 87 and finished with 101, Craig set the saved record with 10, and Moore broke his own single season home run record of nine, which now stands at 11 and put him ranked 11th in the nation.
Because of Capuano's 2022 success, he was signed to the Major League Baseball Draft League. Capuano boasted a 2022 campaign leading the MAC Freedom in strikeouts (101) and innings pitched (85), while ranking second in ERA (2.33) and batting average against (.233). His strikeouts and innings pitched put him ranked 13th in all of Division III and he was one of 19 student-athletes in Division III to strikeout 100 or more batters. Capuano signed with the Trenton Thunder of the Draft League on July 8th and has since carved out a spot in Trenton's starting rotation.
Due to his leadership, Quinn's coaching tree has blossomed over the past four seasons as his assistant coaches have climbed up the coaching ladder as well as former student-athletes, who have dived into the coaching ranks. Andrew Romanella (2020) and Ross Halkias (2022) have won the Michael Schambach Assistant Coach of the Year Award in the FDU athletic department. Romanella, has gone on to become the Head Coach at Centenary University, while another former assistant, J.J Brock, has gone on to become the Associate Head Coach at Bloomfield College. Quinn's former players who are coaching include: Brandon Lopez (Asst. Coach Centenary University), Jonathan Biale (Asst. Coach Drew University), Hakim Hamer (Asst. Coach Raritan Valley C.C.), and Kevin Smiegocki (Asst. Coach FDU 2021).
The Devils made the MAC Freedom Conference Tournament in 2021. Junior 3B Tommy Moore was named First Team All-MAC Freedom in his first season as a Devil, leading the team in batting average (.380), home runs (9), RBI (28), hits (38), slugging percentage (.720), and on-base percentage (.484). His nine home runs led the MAC Freedom. Moore garnered ABCA All Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team honors, making him the first Devil to do so since 2012. Senior RHP/DH AJ Yurista signed a contract with the New York Boulders of the Frontier League, where he made his debut against Team Israel. Jr. LHP/1B DJ Gonnelli was named the department's Tom Wilkinson Comeback Player of the Year.
In Quinn’s second season at the helm of the Devils- a shortened 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic- the team started off hot, winning seven of their last eight games, including a five-game winning streak to finish the season. The 7-4 start was the best for the program since the 2012 season. The Devils were recognized for their hot start by D3baseball.com on March 14. The Devils stacked up well with the MAC Freedom; offensively finishing second in batting average (.296), doubles (24), and walks (52). On the pitching side, the Devils were tied for first in saves (4). In the classroom, the Devils earned a 3.49 team GPA, including 33 student-athletes above a 3.0 and 24 of those above a 3.5. Capuano was named the department's Tom Wilkinson Comeback Player of the Year.
In his first season of 2019, the Devils collected 13 wins, including series wins over Eastern and Wilkes. AJ Yurista notched his second consecutive All-Conference honor, while senior Chris Portelli became the first Devils pitcher to gain an All-Conference selection since 2015. Portelli was named Honorable Mention All-MAC Freedom, while rookie Tyler McCulloch was tabbed as the ECAC Metro Division Rookie of the Month in March. In MAC Freedom games, the Devils hit .311, the highest batting average since the team hit .334 in route to a playoff berth in 2012.  On the base paths, FDU swiped the most bases since 2012, and also boasted the highest slugging percentage and runs per game in the MAC Freedom within the last five years.
Since taking the reign of the Devils baseball program, Quinn has rejuvenated the Devils Baseball Alumni base, its fundraising efforts, and has helped enhance the athletic department. He implemented an annual Alumni Game in the fall and an Alumni Day at a home double-header in the spring season. He enlightened the Alumni connection while developing Devils Career Connect (DC2) initiative, which connects current Devils student-athletes with Devils baseball alums, to enhance the familiarity with networking, internships, and the work force. Quinn has made fundraising an important element of the program, in which he developed the annual First Pitch Dinner to raise funds while kicking off each season. Keynote speakers for the dinner have included Al Leiter (2019), Tom Verducci (2020), and Don Cooper (2021). Also, Quinn is the Co-Director of the Fuel to the Fire Leadership Academy, while being on the Robert T. Sheilds Golf Outing Committee.
