Baseball Cruises Past St. Joseph Brooklyn, 24-3

MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham baseball team improves to 4-0 as they pour on the offense against the St. Joseph Brooklyn Bears on Friday afternoon.

Devils Highlights
  • First year Noah Fiorillo had a successful day at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a double, a triple, and three runs scored.
  • Sophomore Xavier Diaz went 2-for-2 at the plate, with two RBI, two walks, and one stolen base.
  • Junior Tommy Sica and sophomore Matt Bond both went 2-for-3 and contributed two RBI each, with Sica scoring four runs.
  • Senior Chris Kaponis notched his first win of the season after throwing five innings, allowing two runs and a season-high 10 strikeouts.
How It Happened
  • After the Bears took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Devils immediately responded with a two-out RBI single from Diaz to tie the game. The team quickly found themselves in more trouble after the Bears tacked on another run to make it 2-1 in the top of the second inning.
  • In the bottom of the second, the Devils' offense exploded with an eight-run inning as Fiorillo led off the inning with a triple to begin the hit parade for FDU. The Devils recorded five hits and four stolen bases in the inning with the big hit coming off the bat of Peter Longo. The junior backstop launched a three-run triple to the left center gap before eventually scoring on a throwing error to make it 9-2 in favor of the Devils.
  • The Devils went on to have another giant inning in the bottom of the fourth. RBIs from seniors Nicholas Colbert and Zach Ganca, Longo, and Fiorillo helped propel the offense to a seven-run inning. At the end of the fourth, the Devils extended their lead to 17-2.
  • The FDU offense had one last big inning as the Devils scored seven more runs in the eighth. Junior Jake Knapp recorded his first hit and RBI as a Devil with a single to left center. Junior Derek Wenskoski also recorded his first RBI as a Devil with a fielder's choice to the second baseman. Following an RBI from Matt Bond and an error, the Devils found themselves with a 24-3 lead going into the top of the ninth.
  • After pitching a scoreless eighth inning, first year Brayden Rakov closed out the game with a strikeout and a game-ending 6-to-3 double play.
Game Notes
  • This is the first time as far back as 2009 that the Devils started the season 4-0.
  • Twelve players recorded a hit for the Devils' offense, with five having a multi-hit day.
  • Kaponis, Rakov, and junior Evan Sabo combined for three runs and 13 strikeouts to shut down the Bears for the afternoon.
