Early Runs Sink Baseball Against Stevens, 7-2

Hoboken, N.J. (April 19) – Early runs from Stevens (20-10, 11-5 MAC Free) in the first inning proved to be the difference maker as they sunk the FDU-Florham baseball team (10-22. 3-13 MAC Free), 7-2 in the first game of their MAC Freedom series on Friday afternoon

Offensively, Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) had himself a good performance, going 3-for-4 with a double. Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, N.J.) drove in both runs on his only hit of the day while John Rolli (Long Valley, N.J.) went .500 on the day when he went 2-for-4.

Stevens opened the game as strong as you can when they scored six runs in the opening frame to take the 6-0 edge. Those runs were scored on an RBI double to right center, an RBI single to right field, a ground out RBI, a two-RBI single to right field and a fielder's choice RBI.

Both defenses did not budge for five innings when it was FDU that finally got on the board with two runs in the top of the seventh. Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, N.J.) got on base on balls and advanced to second on a bunt single from Jake Hendershot (Martinsville, N.J.). A single to left field from Giovenco gave Santos a bases-loaded opportunity where he delivered with a two-RBI single to left center.

Stevens got an insurance run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single to left field to make the score 7-2 and they were able to defend it down the stretch.

Robbie Hughes (Union, N.J.) suffered the defeat on the mound for the Devils with five hits and six runs allowed in one inning pitched. Alex DeSimone (Long Valley, N.J.) had a good outing in relief for the Devils. He pitched five innings and allowed only one hit during his outing and notched four strikeouts.

FDU-Florham has two more opportunities against Stevens on Saturday, April 20 as they host the Ducks for a 7-9 doubleheader. Before the first game gets started, the Devils will honor their 11 seniors for Senior Day. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00pm.
