Baseball Bested in Doubleheader Action Against Lebanon Valley

Annville, Pa. (March 30) –After their single game victory yesterday against the Flying Dutchmen, the FDU-Florham baseball team (9-14, 3-6 MAC Free)

Jake Hendershot (Martinsville, N.J.) and Matt Aber (Basking Ridge, N.J.) were once again at the forefront of the Devils offense. Hendershot finished the day 4-for-8 with an RBI and two runs scored while Aber totaled three hits, two RBI and a triple.

Game One

The Devils started off game one with the first run to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Zach Ganca (Merrick, N.J.) and Peter Longo (Cherry Hill, N.J.) were both reached on bases-on-balls during their at bats and after an error by the short stop put Tyrus Chippendale (Middlesex, N.J.) on first, a bases-loaded walk with Hendershot at the plate scored Ganca.

The Dutchmen came out firing in the bottom of the frame as the team drove in five runs to flip the game in their favor, 5-1. Those runs were scored on an RBI double down the third base line, an RBI single to right field, a sacrifice fly to center field, and a fielder's choice RBI.

The game one scoring was closed out early in the game in the bottom of the third inning when Lebanon Valley had a solo home run to make the score 6-1. The defenses held each other to a stand still the rest of the way and the early lead helped LVC notch the win and tie the conference series.

Chris Kaponis (Burlington Twp., N.J.) got the start and suffered the defeat on the mound. He pitched two innings and surrendered five runs (three earned) and struck out three batters. He was relieved by Eddie Appollina (Annandale, N.J.) who gave up only one run on five hits and struck out a batter. Michael Dunay (Stockholm, N.J.) closed out the game for the Devils on the mound and only gave up one hit.

Game Two

Fairleigh Dickinson came out of the gate with a run to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Hendershot led off with a single to left field and went all the way to third on a single to right field by John Rolli (Long Valley, N.J.). Hendershot was plated on an RBI ground out by Aber that did the job and gave the Devils the early lead.

FDU was able to extend their advantage to 4-0 in the next inning. Ganca got things going with a single up the middle but a fielder's choice bunt by Dylan Hode (Manalapan, N.J.) forced him out and kept a single runner on base. Mark Geist (Middlesex, N.J.) was walked during his at bat and the Devils got a bases-loaded situation on a single to center field by Chippendale. The first run of the inning was scored on an error during Rolli's at bat and then an RBI single from Aber up the middle scored Geist but Chippendale also scored during that play on an error by the short stop to close out the scoring in the inning.

LVC halved the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the second inning on a sacrifice fly to center field and a fielder's choice RBI.

After a pair of scoreless innings, the Devils once again extended their lead with a run in the top of the fifth for a 5-2 edge. Rolli led off with a double down the left field line and made it all the way home on an RBI single up the middle from Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.).

The momentum of the game shifted in the game when the Flying Dutchmen tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-5 stalemate. Those runs were scored on a two-RBI single to center field and an RBI single to left field. The game then was blown open for Lebanon Valley when the offense came through for six runs in the bottom of the eighth to take an 11-5 advantage that eventually gave them the win.

FDU saw nine pitchers all get a chance on the rubber in game two. Robbie Hughes (Union, N.J.)  got the game two start and pitched two innings and allowed two runs on two hits. Ryan Krug (Long Hill, N.J.), who got the save yesterday, suffered the loss today in relief as the pitcher of record when the Devils lost the lead. He allowed four runs on four hits during his outing.

FDU-Florham returns home on Tuesday, April 2 as they host Lehman College for non-conference action slated for 3:30 pm.
