Madison, N.J. (March 26) –The FDU-Florham baseball team (8-12) scored six of its seven runs on the day in the first two innings of their non-conference face off with Baruch (1-8) that helped the Devils best the Bearcats, 7-2 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Devils were led by
Brody Donovan (South Plainfield, N.J.) who collected two hits, three RBI, a double and a run scored as well as
Jake Hendershot (Martinsville, N.J.) who went 4-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Matt Aber (Basking Ridge, N.J.) also had an impressive outing when he notched his seventh multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored.
Fairleigh Dickinson got things going right out of the gate when they scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the 4-0 lead. Hendershot led off the game with a single up the middle and stole second. A fielding error by the second baseman put
John Rolli (Long Valley, N.J.) on bases. After Aber walked for a bases-loaded situation, a wacky sequence took place in which Donovan plated Hendershot on single to the short stop, but a throwing error by the short stop allowed Rolli and Aber to score and put Donovan on third base. Donovan was plated on the next at bat by
Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) who doubled to right center for the final score of the inning.
FDU extended their lead in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of runs that brought the score in their favor to 6-0. Hendershot once again led off with a hit, this time for right center for a single. A single up the middle by Aber put Hendershot on second and then both student-athletes moved up a base on a well-executed double steal. The two players then advanced on a wild pitch that scored Hendershot while Aber was sent home on an RBI double to left center.
Baruch got themselves on the board the next half inning in the top of the third on a solo homer over the left field fence and an RBI triple to left center to cut the lead to 6-2, but the Bearcats could not get their offense going the rest of the way as the Devils held them to 0 runs down the stretch.
The Devils added an insurance run in bottom of the fourth inning on another wacky sequence where Aber, who triple down the right field line, scored on a fielder's choice during Donovan's at bat but made it home when the catcher dropped the throw home for the error and solidified the score at 7-2, a lead the team hung on to for the rest of the game.
It was a bullpen day for the Devils that saw eight different Devils get their chance on the mound.
Christian Weippert (Long Valley, N.J.) got the start and pitched two innings and allowed no runs, no hits and struck out a batter. In relief, it was
Jonathan Rodenhaver (Port Republic, Md.) who was credited with a win when he pitched 1.1 innings and allowed no hits, no runs and struck out two batters.
Evan Sabo (Hillsborough, N.J.) led the pitchers on the day in strikeouts with three.
FDU-Florham is back to MAC Freedom play when they start their three-game conference series against Lebanon Valley at home on Friday, March 26 for a 3:30pm start time.
