Glenside, PA (March 25) – A huge first inning of game one helped the FDU-Florham Softball team (7-8) earn their first MAC Freedom conference win of the season with an 11-8 score over the Arcadia Knights (7-11), but dropped game two by a score of 14-5, in the Monday evening contest.
Game 1:
FDU-Florham was ready to start MAC Freedom play as soon as the first pitch left the circle. Your Devils started the first inning with eight runs on seven hits, including seven RBI to give themselves a comfortable lead when on defense in the field.
A ball was hit toward second baseman
Kylee Berg (Bordentown, NJ) in the bottom of the first, and was able to make the play to first base for the out, but Arcadia was able to secure the RBI for their first run of the game, 8-1.
Arcadia added another run in the bottom of the third inning to close the gap but the Devils opened the gap wider as they tacked on an additional run after
Jada Lambright (Clifton Park, NY) flew out to center field for the sacrifice RBI.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Knights closed the scoring margin within four runs as a double to center field sent three batters home for Arcadia, resulting in a 9-5 score still in favor of the Devils.
Both teams added a run in the sixth inning and FDU-Florham added another for good measure in the seventh inning, 11-6, with a single to center field from
Alissa Gallion (Roseland, NJ). Arcadia was swung for the fences in a final inning effort but came up short as only two runs and two hits were recorded, resulting in an 11-8 score for the Devils and their first MAC Freedom win of the season.
The Devils saw first-year
Kelly Cornog (Newtown Square, PA) (5-5) pitching in the circle for game one. She recorded the win with five strikeouts while facing 40 batters in seven innings. Arcadia saw Pagie Nolan (1-4) pitching through 0.2 innings before being given the loss with only two strikeouts.
Game 2:
After a scoreless first inning, FDU-Florham was able to secure its first runs of the game after a single to right field from,
Victoria Fantozzi (Hillsborough, NJ), brought in 2 RBI. Arcadia was able to follow behind on the scoring effort with only one run to end the second inning.
Arcadia took their first lead of the series in the third inning after a single through the left side tied the game, and a walk to send the runner home claimed the 3-2 lead heading into the fourth inning.
The Devils were not backing down on the offensive end as graduate student
Bianca DiSanto (Colonia, NJ) tied the game in the fourth inning with an RBI single to right field. Their lead was extended to a score of 5-3 in the top of the fifth after another RBI single, as well as a double down the left-field line from
Heather Priante (Howell, NJ).
Arcadia was not done on the offensive end yet as they were able to add their fourth run of the night in the bottom of the fifth after a batter was hit by a pitch, forcing all runners to advance including the runner on third base to home.
The Knight's scoring momentum continued as another single up the middle brought in the tying run in the sixth inning, 5-5. Arcadia did not let up as they were able to add 5 more runs and secured the 14-5 win over the Devils in six innings with a grand slam.
Game two was pitched by
Fantozzi (2-2) as she pitched through 5.2 innings and faced 42 batters with 2 strikeouts. Securing the win for Arcadia was Paige Nolan as she was seen in 1.2 innings and recorded only 2 strikeouts on 5 batters.
FDU-Florham will have a quick turn-around time and host Wilkes for a non-conference doubleheader in support of Strikeout Cancer on Tuesday, March 26. The first pitches will be thrown at 3pm and 5pm.
