Myrtle Beach, SC (March 12) –In their final game of their spring break schedule down in Myrtle Beach, the FDU-Florham baseball team (5-7) fell short against Colby Sawyer, 7-5 during the Tuesday morning matchup.
Despite the loss,
Dylan Hode (Manalapan, N.J.) had an impressive day, hitting two-for-four with two RBI, two runs scored and collected his first career home run.
Brody Donovan (South Plainfield, N.J.) also batted two-for-four while
Jack Giovenco (Allentown, Pa.) and
Peter Longo (Cherry Hill, N.J.) each recorded a hit and an RBI.
It was the Devils that got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning with a four-run second frame that helped the team jump out to a 4-0 advantage.
Aaron Santos (Bridgewater, N.J.) started off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a single through the left side by Donovan.
Zach Ganca (Merrick, N.J.) created a bases-loaded opportunity after he singled down the right field line and Giovenco's single to left centerfield scored Santos. Hode put down a well-placed bunt for a single and in an effort to get him out, the pitcher for the Chargers overthrew his first baseman for an error that scored both Ganca and Giovenco. The final run of the inning was brought in by Longo on an RBI single through the right side.
The Chargers cut the lead to 4-1 in the next frame on a sacrifice fly to left field and the team took the advantage after a five-run top of the fifth to take a 6-4 edge and then extended their lead in the top of the seventh to make the score, 7-4.
Fairleigh Dickinson's last run of the game came on Hode's lead-off solo shot over the left field fence to cut the score to 7-5. The Devils had good chance to take the advantage in the bottom of the seventh with a bases-loaded and no outs opportunity, but Colby Sawyer was able to get out of it with three straight outs and then held the Devils in the bottom of the ninth, who had a runner on third and the tying run at the plate but the defense held to seal the win.
Robbie Hughes (Union, N.J.) suffered his second loss of the season in his third start of the year, surrendering five runs on six hits and striking out two batters. Both
Jake Stollar (Flemington, N.J.) and
Sebastian Alverio (Belleville, N.J.) both got innings on the mound in relief. Stollar pitched 2.2 innings and allowed two runs on four hits and struck out two batters. Alverio pitched two innings and allowed no hits or runs and struck out five of his six baters faced.
