Madison, NJ (February 17) – In the final MAC Freedom regular season contest, the FDU-Florham Women's Basketball team fell to the Stevens Ducks by a score of 78-47 in Saturday afternoon action.
Before the game, FDU-Florham honored its two seniors
Destiny Knight (Philadelphia, Pa) and
Nour Elsayyid (Dover, NJ) on their careers as Devil student-athletes.
FDU-Florham (11-13, 4-9 MAC Freedom) was led by
Neysa Aguilar (Middlesex, NJ) who scored 14 points and grabbed 1 rebound.
Julia Vazquez (Bound Brooke, NJ) added 10 points and 4 rebounds to the Devils score book.
Stevens (14-11, 9-5 MAC Freedom) saw a 24-point performance from Kay Decker, who also grabbed 14 rebounds.
The first points of the game were scored by Stevens after a made free throw, two minutes into play.
Aguilar was able to produce FDU-Florham's first points as she drove through the lane for a layup.
Stevens was able to pull ahead to a 14-6 score with 2:21 remaining in the first half. The Devils were able to close the margin with five points after a three-pointer from
Christina Centeno (Bayonne, NJ) and a layup from
Aguilar, to end the first quarter 16-11.
The Ducks were able to jump-start the next ten minutes of action with a 10-3 scoring run on the Devils, but
Shannon Tighe (Wayne, NJ) tried to slow the momentum with a three-pointer to have the score read 26-17. Multiple Devils continued to try but fell short as the second quarter ended with a score of 38-19, in favor of Stevens.
FDU-Florham started the third quarter with each team trading baskets for the score to read 46-27.
Vazquez allowed the Devils to come within 16 points after a three-pointer, at the 5:31 minute mark. The Ducks were able to stretch the lead even further to a 22-point differential and ended 30 minutes of play with the score reading 62-40.
Stevens was able to keep their momentum flowing into the fourth quarter, but FDU-Florham kept with it as each team scored six points just under the six-minute mark. The Ducks however pulled away for the remainder of the time on a 10-2 scoring run.
FDU-Florham shot 28.1 percent (18-for-64) from the floor, 23.1 percent (6-for-26) from three-point range, and 62.5 percent (5-for-8) from the free throw line, while Stevens shot 43.8-percent (32-for-73) from the floor, 15.8-percent (3-for-19) from three-point range and 68.8-percent (11-for-16) from the free throw line.
Stevens was able to score 42 points in the paint, 15 points of the fast break, and 35 bench points.
