Madison, NJ (January 13) – In a Saturday afternoon MAC Freedom match-up, the FDU-Florham Women's Basketball team hosted Misericordia and the game resulted in a thrilling 59-50 win for the Devils over the Cougars.
FDU-Florham ( 9-5, 2-2 MAC Freedom) survived with the scoring efforts of
Neysa Aguilar (Middlesex, NJ) and
Christina Centeno (Bayonne, NJ) who both scored in double digit figures.
Aguilar was responsible for 18 points and 5 rebounds, as
Centeno added 14 points and 3 rebounds to the record book.
Misericordia (6-9, 0-4 MAC Freedom) saw Jocelyn Grosch with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds.
With Misericordia owning the opening tip and the first bucket of the game, the Devils found
Centeno from behind the arc to start a 19-2 run on the Cougars. The Devils ended the first quarter with a 14-point differential and a score of 22- 8.
The Cougars were able to score on the offensive end in the second quarter as they almost outscored the Devils 11-13 points. First-year
Shannon Tighe (Wayne, NJ) helped the Devils pull ahead to a 35-19 score at the end of the second by producing four points and four rebounds.
Misericordia started off the third quarter with a 11-4 run, with just under six minutes remaining as they were seen shooting 50.0-percent (3-6) from behind the arc. The Devils were outscored 19-10 but were able to keep the lead heading into the fourth quarter, 45-38.
As the clock ticked down, so did the point differential between the two teams. At the 7:21 timestamp, a two-point game resulted after a jumper from Misericordia brought them closer to the heat. The Devils continued to knock their shots to up the score, but Misericordia remained within distance to take the next basket.
With 1:24 remaining the Cougars were able to close the game within three after a made three-point field goal. The Devils were later fouled and were able to convert their free-throws to ensure a 50-59 win.
FDU-Florham shot 33.3-percent (21-for-63) from the floor, 20.0-percent (3-for-15) from three-point range and 82.4-percent (14-for-17) from the free throw line, while Misericordia shot 31.1-percent (19-for-61) from the floor, 33.3-percent (6-for-18) from three point range and 60.0-percent (6-for-10) from the free throw line.
FDU-Florham scored 28 points in the paint, 10 fast break points and 21 points off of the Cougars turnover.
The Devils will accept a visit from Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, 17 for a 7pm as their next MAC Freedom match-up.
