Mahwah, NJ (September 16) –The FDU-Florham volleyball team (7-4) traveled to Mahwah, NJ for a tri-match on the Ramapo College campus. The team fell in its first match against Ramapo (6-0), 3-0 but were able to bounce back and sweep Pratt (3-2), 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Vs. Ramapo
Jada Everett (Hackensack, NJ) led the way with eight kills during the morning matchup.
Vanessa Freeman (Piscataway, NJ) collected five kills, five digs and four service aces.
Victoria Carrico (Mountainside, NJ) posted 11 assists in the contest followed closely by
Lilli Nawrotzki (Flemington, NJ) who tallied nine.
Set 1: The Roadrunners took the early advantage as a few small runs allowed them to jump out to a 10-5 lead.
Gabbie Hart (Cherry Hill, NJ) knocked down a kill to bring the score within six, but a 4-0 run kept the Devils at bay again as the Roadrunners jumped out to a 14-6 edge. FDU scored three-straight points including kills from Hart and Everett, but Ramapo answered with three-straight points of their own. The pattern continued down the stretch and Ramapo took set one, 25-15.
Set 2: It was a back-and-forth set two. Freeman helped the Devils jump out to their first lead of the match (3-2) with two service aces early, but it was immediately answered by three-straight points and the Roadrunners regained the lead. The largest number of unanswered points was only four as after a Freeman kill at the 10-8 score was met with four-straight points of Ramapo and they jumped out to a 14-6 lead. The Devils inched close at several points during the set but were always kept at bay by the Roadrunners. Four unanswered points at the 19-17 mark made the set out of reach and Ramapo took set two with a score of 25-19.
Set 3: Set three was all Ramapo, jumping out to scores of 4-0, 12-4, 15-6 and 21-8. The Devils saw two kills from Everett and a kill from Hart late, but the Roadrunners kept strong and completed the sweep with a 25-11 set three victory.
Vs. Pratt
Everett once again led the team in kills with another eight in this matchup followed closely by Freeman and
Arianna Wood (Wayne, NJ) who each had seven. Nawrotzki led the team in assists for the first time this season with 12 followed closely by Carrico who had 11.
Charlotte Fruscione (Mahwah, NJ) and Wood each posted their fifth double-digit dig matches with 13 and 11, respectively.
Set 1: The Devils jumped out to a 7-2 lead early. Pratt inched their way back to a 7-5 score, but an attack error gave momentum back to FDU. The Cannoneers got their first lead of the set after being down 12-10 and finding three points to jump out to a 13-12 advantage. Both teams battled in the middle of the set with three lead changes up to a 16-16 stalemate. The Devils then found five unanswered highlighted by two service aces by
Charlee Tarlac (Union, NJ) and a kill by
Rachel Reiter (Riverside, Calif) to take a 21-16 lead. Fairleigh Dickinson was able to fend of Pratt the rest of the set and a kill from Freeman closed out a 25-19 set one win.
Set 2: The early set advantage was in the favor of FDU as they jumped out to leads of 5-2, 11-4, and 15-7. The Cannoneers built a big run at the 17-10 score mark, scoring six unanswered to cut the Devils lead to just one. Pratt got their first lead of the set as they scored a pair of points down one to take a 22-21 lead. The set got to the 25-25 tie and with a win by two necessary, Everett got a kill, and an attack error gave the Devils the set two win, 27-25.
Set 3: Six lead changes happened in the early portion of the third set with FDU holding an 8-7 edge. The Devils held the lead for awhile until Pratt regained it with an 18-17 lead. Fairleigh Dickinson fell behind 21-20, but cam through down the stretch with Everett coming up big with four kills in the final five points for the Devils as they completed the sweep with a set three score of 25-22.
The Devils open up MAC Freedom play at home on Wednesday, September 20 as they host Misericordia for a 7:00 pm contest.
