Softball Falls to Meredith & #22 Concordia on Final Day in Florida

Leesburg, Fla. (March 17) – The FDU-Florham softball team wrapped up its spring trip to Florida with losses to Meredith College and #22 Concordia (Wisconsin) this afternoon. FDU played five games in the Orlando area and posted a 2-3 record while away from the Florham campus.

Game One: Meredith 11, FDU-Florham 0

Meredith took advantage of an error in the top of the first inning and put up a three spot before the Devils swung the bat. FDU had a runner in scoring position in each of the first three innings, but Meredith pitcher Sarah Gundlach worked out of the jam each and every time. The game was 6-0 in favor of Meredith heading into the seventh when the Avenging Angels scored five more to put the game out of reach ending it with a final score of 11-0.

Colleen Conway (Amityville, NY) led the Devils with two hits in three at-bats against Meredith. FDU's other two hits came from Kristen Tigar (Hazlet, NJ) and Dana Giardina (New Fairfield, Conn.).

Gundlach (3-0) spun a complete game shutout, struck out 12 batters and only scattered four hits for Meredith College. Ciara Hoffman (Freehold, NJ) took the loss (2-2) as she pitched the first five innings of today's opener. Hoffman allowed five runs (two earned) and 13 hits in the effort.

Game Two: Concordia 8, FDU-Florham 0

Concordia scored twice in the bottom of the first on a double by Kesley Bolllon and four in the bottom of the second for a 6-0 advantage. After her two run double in the first, Bollon came to the plate in the second with the bases loaded and cleared the bags with a double to center. Bollon scored Concordia's sixth run on an RBI single to left center by Claudia Utz.

As she did in the opener, Tigar posted FDU's first hit of game two as she singled through the left side with two outs in the third.

The Devils had their best chance to score in the top of the sixth after back to back singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out, but Nicki Becker (6-0) got out of the jam and gave her team the chance to end the game in the bottom of the inning.

With runners on first and second, a two run triple to the gap in right center by Utz ended the game with Concordia ahead 8-0. Becker earned the win as she struck out ten and scattered four hits for Concordia.

Bianca DiSanto (Colonia, NJ) took the loss (0-1) on 4.2 innings, eight hits, six earned runs and one strikeout.

FDU will return to New Jersey and open Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play on Sunday afternoon with a home doubleheader at noon against Delaware Valley University.
