Madison, NJ (November 12) – Two goals in the second half by sophomore Mia Lopez (Rockaway, NJ) lifted the FDU-Florham women's soccer team past Goucher College, 3-0, and into the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship game.
With the win, FDU-Florham improved to 16-5-1 and broke the single season program record for victories. The Devils will play second-seeded DeSales University tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm on Robert T. Shields in the ECAC Division III title game. Tomorrow's matchup with DeSales will be the third meeting between the Bulldogs and the Devils this season and will mark FDU-Florham's third appearance in the ECAC Final, the first since 2006.
After a tight opening 30 minutes between FDU-Florham and Goucher (8-7-3), the Devils broke through in the 34th minute on an own goal.
Francesca Escudero (Bridgewater, NJ) lined up for a corner kick and after the ball bounced in the box, it was tipped in off a Goucher defender.
Lopez registered her 17th and 18th goals of the season less than three minutes apart. The first came off a feed by
Ashley Dietrich (Middletown, NJ) and the second came unassisted for the 3-0 advantage.
FDU-Florham keeper
Erica Blackburn (Marlboro, NJ) made three saves and improved to 16-5-1 this season, while Goucher keeper Marissa Spacht made three stops in net for the Gophers.
In the first-ever meeting between the two clubs, FDU-Florham held a 17-9 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
Top-seeded FDU-Florham and second-seeded DeSales University will play for the third time this season in tomorrow's ECAC Championship match at 1:00 pm on Robert T. Shields Field.
