Softball Splits DH at Home versus DeSales

MADISON, NJ (April 18, 2021)- FDU Softball hosted DeSales University on Senior Day Saturday afternoon, dropping game one of the DH, 6-3 and winning game two, 5-4.
 
Game 1- 6-3, L
Senior Kaleigh Oplinger started ion the circle for FDU.
 
The Devils started the scoring in the first off the bat of first year Kacie Centineo scoring Senior Dani Sames. In the second, senior Nicole Casale parked a ball over the left field fence to give FDU a 2-0 advantage. Oplinger kept the Bulldogs offense at bay for five innings before DeSales broke through in the top of sixth, scoring six runs and taking a 6-2 lead. The Devils scratched one across in the bottom of the sixth, eventually falling 6-3.
 
Centineo and senior Francesca Shipe each collected two hits, followed by seniors Taylor Tobey and Hunter Ruppel and junior Colleen Conway and first year Heather Priante with one apiece.
 
Game 2- 5-4, W
Junior Ciara Hoffman took the ball in game two for FDU. Hoffman went the distance, giving up only four hits and striking out four.
 
The Devils scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning off the bat of junior Morgan DeLoreto scoring Shipe. DeSales tied it in the top of the fourth, scoring a run on three hits to tie the game at 1-1. FDU responded in the bottom of the frame off the bat of DeLoreto again, this time following singles from Centineo, Shipe and Casale, she roped a double to left center scoring two and grabbing FDU the 3-1 lead. The Bulldogs responded in the top of the fifth with two runs to tie the game again. First-year Abigail Wittig scored the go ahead run on a steal of second from Shipe, FDU regained the 4-3 advantage. The Devils added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth, when Sames scored on a wild pitch to increase the score to 5-3. Hoffman was able to shut the door in the seventh after DeSales rallied for one to secure the 5-4 victory.
 
Three different Devils collected two hits, with Casale, DeLoreto and Shipe combining for six. Conway, Centineo and Priante picked up a hit apiece.
 
Next Up
The Devils host Stevens Tech on Wednesday, April 21, in a doubleheader starting at 3:00 pm.
