Devils Drop Two in North Carolina

Devils lose game 1 of DH by a score of 5-0; Fall in game 2, 3-4

Misenheimer, N.C. (March 10, 2020) – The FDU softball team continued play in North Carolina on Tuesday, as part of their 2020 Spring Break Trip. The Devils faced off against the Pfeiffer University Falcons of the USA South Athletic Conference. In the front leg of the double header, the Devils were bested by the Falcons by a score of 5-0. In the next contest, the Devils came up short by a score of 4-3. With the losses, FDU falls to 0-8 in the season. The Falcons use the two wins to improve their win total to 14-1.

 KICKING THINGS OFF

In GAME ONE against the Falcons, Pfeiffer used solid defense to get the better end of FDU. Despite facing stable defensive pressure, Devils' batters combined for only one strikeout through the seven-inning game. In the second inning of the ballgame, sophomore Morgan DeLoreto ignited the Devils' offensive efforts with a single to center field. DeLoreto would then advance to second base on a wild pitch to give FDU their first runner in scoring position of the day. In the top half of the fourth inning, the FDU offense muscled together two hits. DeLoreto got the Devils started once more, as she singled to shortstop. The next batter, junior Dani Sames, singled to move Deloreto to second base, to give the Devils another running in scoring position.

On the mound, junior Kaleigh Oplinger gave up zero runs, to take the game into the fifth inning with the Falcons on top, 4-0. In the fifth inning, Oplinger rendered the Falcons batters scoreless once more, as she got through the inning with giving up just one hit. At the bottom of the sixth inning, DeLoreto tallied her third hit in the afternoon as she recorded another single. The Devils were unable to gain any momentum in the seventh inning as they fell to the home Pfeiffer University by a score of 5-0.

 FINAL SCORE: 5-0 Pfeiffer University

 LEAD DEVLS (GAME 1)

On the mound, Oplinger went the full distance for FDU. She struck out two Falcons batters and recorded multiple innings in which she only gave up one hit. In the lineup, DeLoreto led all players with three hits. On the base path, senior Gabby Young followed a walk with stealing second base in the top of the first inning.

 THE FINALE

The Devils second batter of the game, senior Tara Morash, doubled to kick things off for the team in the top of the first thing. In the bottom half of the inning, however, the Falcons would execute as they scored one run to take the early 1-0 lead. Trailing 2-0 and now in the top half of the fourth inning, DeLoreto added yet another hit to her afternoon total, as she singled down the right-field line. The Falcons would tack on one additional run as they went into the sixth inning with a 3-0 lead over the Devils. Trailing, Young opened up the Devils half of the inning with a single to shortstop. Following a sacrifice bunt by Morash, Young advanced to scoring position at second base. Next at-bat, freshman Kristina Pelano singled to left field, to move Young to third base, and give the Devils runners on the corner.

Needing a big hit, the Devils turned to a familiar face in DeLoreto who doubled to center field, as Young scored to cut the Devils' deficit to 3-1. Following a walk by junior Francesca Shipe, Sames singled to shortstop, to bring home Pelano and cut the Falcons lead to 3-2. A few batters later, junior Nicole Casale popped-up to the Falcons first baseman, which allowed runners to advance. Junior Hunter Ruppel, who was in the game as a pinch hitter, advanced home on a wild pitch to even up the score at 3-3. In the bottom half of the inning, the Falcons would score once more, as they took the 4-3 lead. Despite the Devils' comeback efforts, Pfeiffer would hold on to win the game.

FINAL SCORE: 4-3 Pfeiffer University
