UNION, NJ (February 23, 2020)- FDU baseball fell in a non-conference match-up on Sunday afternoon at Kean University, 8-3. With the loss, the Devils fall to 0-2 on the season while the Cougars improve to 4-2.
RECAP
Kean set the tone early, capitalizing on some early FDU mistakes and getting timely hitting in the bottom of the first inning. The Cougars went on to score seven runs, six unearned on five hits and one Devils error off of FDU starter, sophomore
DJ Gonnelli. Kean would add only one more run the remainder of the game thanks to stellar pitching performances from freshmen relievers
Grant Goodlad,
Anthony Molina-Porras, junior
Matthew Godlewski and senior
John Franco.
The Devils broke through in the game's final inning. Freshman
Ryan Toomey led the inning off getting hit by a pitch, followed by singles from juniors
AJ Yurista and
Matt Nodoro. Freshman
Vincent Ferrigno stepped to the dish and hit a ball in play to record his first collegiate RBI and get the Devils on the board. Sophomore
Tyler McCulloch would reach on a throwing error in the next at-bat, to score Nodoro and Yurista. Kean held on 8-3.
LEAD DEVIL
Godlewski entered the game to pitch in the seventh inning and needed only seven pitches to retire three batters for a perfect 1-2-3 inning.
FIRST TIMER
Goodlad and Molina both recorded their first college outings on the mound while Toomey scored his first collegiate run and Ferrigno recorded his first collegiate RBI.
FROM COACH
"You can't spot a good team 6 unearned runs and expect to compete. It's a different ballgame if we can damage control in the first. The way our freshman played is promising and our relievers did a good job on the hill as well. "– Head Coach
Jamie Quinn
NEXT UP
The Devils return to action on Saturday, February 29 when they travel to Rutgers-Newark University for a non-conference DH starting at 11:30 a.m.
