UNION, NJ (February 22, 2020)- The FDU Softball program opened their 2020 season at Kean University on Saturday, dropping games to Kean, 8-0 and New York University, 7-5. With the losses, the Devils fall to 0-2 on the young season while both the Cougars and Violets improve to 1-0.
GAME 1 vs KU
The Cougars came out swinging, scoring two runs in the first, three runs in the second and three runs in the third. Kean's pitching staff held the FDU offense in check, keeping the Devils to only two hits on the game, both off the bat of sophomore
Dana Giardina.
GAME 2 vs NYU
NYU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, platting two runs in the top of the first inning. FDU responded immediately, with a steal of home executed perfectly by senior
Gabby Young. The Devils would tie the game thanks to an RBI single from junior
Dani Sames the scored junior
Hunter Ruppel and avdanced Giardina to third. Still in the top of the first, FDU would take their first leads off a sophomore
Colleen Conway RBI single that scored Ruppel. At the end of one, FDU led 3-2.
NYU would regain the lead in the second, scoring three runs on three hits. The Violets would continue to add onto their lead, scoring runs in the fourth and seventh innings to hold a 7-3 advantage headed into the final half frame. Young added to the Devils score in the bottom of the seventh, advancing home on a throw to second base. FDU would continue to fight, adding another run on a Sames RBI single. NYU would shut the door to secure the victory.
LEAD DEVIL
Giardana swang a hot bat all day for the Devils, finishing game one 2-for-2 and game two 3-for-4 with a run scored. All-in-all, she ended the DH with a 5-for-6 perform at the plate.

FDU Softball returns to action on Saturday, February 29th when they travel to The College of New Jersey for another split team double header versus TCNJ and NYU. Game one versus TCNJ is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. with first pitch for game two set for 1:00 p.m.
