Doylestown, PA (January 22, 2020)- FDU Women's Basketball won their first Middle Atlantic Freedom Conference match-up on Wednesday night, defeating Delaware Valley University 73-44. With the win, the Devils improve to 3-13 overall and 1-4 in the MAC Freedom while the Aggies fall to 1-15 overall and 0-5 in conference play.
FIRST HALF
The game was back and forth early, with two ties in the first two and a half minutes of action. At 6:20 in the first quarter, senior
Cayla Staggers hit a layup and sophomore
Helen Ishmael followed with one of her own, to give FDU an early 8-4 advantage. Delaware Valley would chip away at the Devils lead, pulling ahead at the 3:12 mark, 12-11. Freshman
Jayda Bing would knock down two free throws to take the lead back and FDU would finish the quarter on a 7-0, ending the first 10-minutes up 17-12.
FDU scored the second quarters first two-points on free-throws from Senior
Jennah Roman. The Aggies answered with seven of the games next 11 points to cut the Devils lead back down to four, 23-19 at the 7:04 mark. The Devils again tacked on to their lead, thanks to buckets from Roman and Junior
Aleah Bass. After Delaware Valley brought it to 26-24 with 4:42 remaining in the half, FDU would close out the quarter on an eight-to-two run and take a 34-26 lead into the break.
SECOND HALF
Freshman
Angela Downey got the scoring started for the Devils, knocking down a three-point backset at the 8:33 mark. Staggers would follow adding a layup and free-throw, Bing would drive the lane for two and in less than three minutes, FDU built a 15-point lead. The Devils never looked back and over the final twenty minutes of play, outscored the Aggies 39-18 and held them to only three points in the third quarter. FDU had 25 of their final 39 points in the third quarter, with five different players recording a point. Overall, FDU spent 35:17 of the games 40:00 minutes with the lead.
LEAD DEVIL
Freshman
Jayda Bing led the way for FDU, recording a double-double and finishing with 19 points and 11 rebounds. She also chipped in three assists, two blocks and one steal.
CAREER DAY
Staggers finished the day with a career high in points, 18 and field goals made, eight. She did so on 8-of-9 (89%) from the field.
PASS FIRST
Roman dished out five assists to her Devils teammates, which marks the sixth time this season she has finished with five or more assists.
WIN THE GLASSÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
The Devils out rebounded Delaware Valley 42-33, including a plus 10 advantage on the defensive glass.
