MADISON, N.J. (May 11, 2019) – Senior
Caroline Pape recorded her 100th point of the season, but the FDU-Florham women's lacrosse team was topped by Cabrini University 14-11 in the ECAC Semifinals Saturday.
The Devils close out the season with a 10-9 record, as Cabrini improves to 13-8 on the year. The Cavaliers will meet Drew University tomorrow at noon in the ECAC Championship game. The Rangers advanced with a 16-5 triumph over Marymount University in the second semifinal contest.
FDU needed just 51 seconds to open their scoring account on the day. After a foul in the critical scoring area, junior
Aliyha Elk was awarded a free-position attempt. The junior moved in and beat the goalkeeper to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. The two sides traded the next two goals, with senior
Kathleen Petrucelli recording a free-position tally of her own, breaking the 1-1 tie.
The Cavaliers reeled off the next eight goals, spanning 12 minutes. Sophomore
Hannah Bhend broke the run, converting a Pape pass with 6:44 remaining in the stanza. The assist pushed Pape's point total to a crisp 100 on the season, as she became just the third Devil in program history to cross the 100 point plateau in a season. Cabrini closed out the period with one final tally, but senior
Megan Nemeth made a stop with 20 seconds left to keep the score at 10-3 entering halftime.
Cabrini held a 23-11 edge in shots over the first half, but the Devils scooped up 20 ground balls. Nemeth made six saves in over the first 30 minutes.
After a Nemeth stop early in the second half, the Devils moved the ball upfield in transition. They were able to draw a free-position and off the restart, Pape found junior
Madison Wood for the opening marker of the second stanza. The visiting Cavaliers netted the next goal, but 21 seconds later, FDU took advantage of a draw control win with Pape tallying her first goal of the day. Sophomore
Mia Michaelides notched the assist on the goal and was responsible for the draw control that led to possession.
Senior
Caitlyn Damon got in on the action, cutting the gap down to five with 20:10 left, as Petrucelli collected an assist. Cabrini recorded two of the next three goals before Petrucelli restored the five-goal differential with an unassisted tally with 5:45 remaining in the frame.
Cabrini registered their final goal of the game with 4:22 on the clock, but the Devils made it interesting, scoring three times in the final 3:29. Petrucelli recorded the next two goals, both coming with a man-advantage and off free-position attempts. With just 32 seconds left, Damon and Petrucelli linked up, cutting the deficit down to 14-11. FDU was unable to push any closer, sending Cabrini into the championship game.
