Softball Runs Winning Streak to Six with Sweep of St. Joseph's-Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (April 7, 2019) - The FDU-Florham softball team used 7-1 and 5-2 victories to complete a sweep of St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn Sunday afternoon.

FDU has won six straight contests and moved to 9-14 on the season.

GAME 1: FDU-Florham 7, St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 1
The Devils wasted little time, scoring three times in their opening at-bat. Juniors Gabby Young and Tara Morash led off with singles before both swiped a base to move to second and third. Sophomore Dani Sames had the big knock, a two-run double to centerfield. After a walk, senior Courtney Rohde brought Sames around with a single to right. Freshman Ciara Hoffman allowed just two base-runners through three innings, but the hosts chipped away with a run in the fourth.

FDU got the run back in the top of the fifth. Morash and Sames singled with one out before sophomore Nicole Casale drilled a double to right-center to plate Morash. Hoffman escaped a second and third two-out jam in the fifth, getting a fielder's choice to end the frame.

The Devils added to their lead in the sixth, scoring twice. Sophomore Francesca Shipe and rookie Emma Gaffney led off the stanza with singles before a Taylor Tobey sacrifice bunt moved the runners over. After a strikeout, Morash and Sames dropped singles in the outfield to score runs. The Bears put two runners in the sixth with one down, but Hoffman closed the inning out with a fly out to centerfield and comebacker to the mound. Shipe capped off the scoring in the seventh, delivering a double to right to score who had doubled with one out.

GAME 2: FDU-Florham 5, St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 2
After a scoreless two innings, the Devils struck for a tally in the fourth. Tobey doubled to left field to lead off the third and two batters later, Sames drilled a triple to right field to plate Tobey. The Bears leveled the game in the bottom half of the frame, as an RBI double with two outs tied the game at one.

The Devils regained the lead in the fifth, and again it was the Tobey/Sames combo that created the run. Tobey hit another double to left and moved to third on a Morash single. Sames came with runners on the corners and doubled to left-center, scoring Tobey. Once again, the Bears pulled even, this time courtesy of an RBI single up the middle.

FDU broke through for three runs in the sixth, starting with Shipe leading off with a single. After a walk and a Tobey single loaded the bases, Young singled through the left side, scoring Shipe and pinch-runner Annamarie Santangelo. Two batters later, Tobey would score on an error to cap off the scoring and complete the sweep for the Devils.
