MADISON, N.J. (April 3, 2019) – The FDU-Florham softball team rallied from two runs down with a three-run fifth inning to top the College of Mount St. Vincent Wednesday.
The Devils improve to 5-14, while Mount St. Vincent dropped to 5-12.
The Dolphins scored in the top of the first, but the damage was limited as the Devils threw a runner out at the plate attempting to score. Freshman
Ciara Hoffman set the Dolphins down in order in the second, before the visitors doubled their lead in the third on an RBI double.
The Devils took the lead in the third, as junior
Annamarie Santangelo reached on a one-out bunt single. Sophomore
Taylor Tobey was the next batter and brought Santangelo home as an errant throw by the catcher sailed into right field. Juniors
Gabby Young and
Tara Morash loaded the bases with bunt singles before Tobey scampered home on a wild pitch. The Devils capped off the scoring with a run-scoring groundout by sophomore
Nicole Casale.
After a scoreless fourth, Mount St. Vincent tacked on three runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Consecutive RBI singles brought in two runs, while a third came home on an error by the Devils shortstop.
The Devils took the lead for good in the fifth, plating three runs on four hits. Singles by freshman
Morgan DeLoreto, Tobey and Young loaded the bases before a wild pitch scored both Tobey and Young to tie things at five. Casale dropped a single into right field, pushing the Devils in front 6-5.
Sophomore
Kaleigh Oplinger worked a perfect sixth inning, but the Dolphins threatened in the final frame. Back-to-back singles with one out in the seventh put two runners on base, but Oplinger induced a pop-up to third base for the second out. With two down, the sophomore notched a strikeout to finish off the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Oplinger worked three innings in relief to earn her fourth win and has recorded four of the five Devils wins this season. The sophomore fanned four batters in her three frames of work.
• Junior
Megan Zaccario struck out five in two innings, allowing just two hits and a walk.
• Tobey and Young each collected two hits, with Casale driving in two runs.
