Oplinger Leads Softball to Win in Opener Against Mount St. Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (April 23, 2019) – Sophomore Kaleigh Oplinger tossed a one-hit shutout in game one as the FDU-Florham softball team topped Mount St. Mary (N.Y.) 4-0 before darkness ended the second game in a 2-2 tie Tuesday.

FDU is 13-17-1 on the season as Mount St. Mary moves to 12-19-1.

GAME 1: FDU-Florham 4, Mount St. Mary 0
The Devils scored the opening run in the second inning, starting with a leadoff single for rookie Dana Giardina. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, Giardina crossed home on a single from classmate Colleen Conway. The lead doubled in the third, as junior Annamarie Santangelo and sophomore Taylor Tobey singled to lead off the inning. Junior Gabby Young walked to load the bases before classmate Tara Morash singled through the left side for the RBI knock.

The Knights collected their only hit in the bottom of the third inning with two outs; an infield hit to the shortstop. Sophomore Dani Sames recorded RBI groundouts in the fifth and seventh innings to stretch the lead to four, driving in Young each time. The four runs were all Oplinger needed, as she retired the final 13 Knight hitters, ending the game with an infield pop-up.

GAME 2: FDU-Florham 2, Mount St. Mary 2
Junior Megan Zaccario opened game two by allowing just one base-runner over the first three innings as the Devils took a 2-0 lead. In the top half of the third, Young reached on a one-out bunt single before stealing second. After a Morash sacrifice, Sames beat out a hit to the shortstop, plating Young. The lead doubled in the fourth, as freshman Morgan DeLoreto homered to centerfield.

The host Knights cut the lead in half in the home half of fourth, scoring on an RBI single to right field. The damage was limited, as Zaccario ended with a strikeout as the bases were loaded. Freshman Ciara Hoffman relived Zaccario in the fifth and escaped a two-on, two out jam in the stanza with an unassisted groundout to first.

FDU threatened to add to their lead in the top of the seventh. Tobey and Young each singled with one out before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. The side was retired on a groundout to short. The Knights tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh, as consecutive hits brought home the tying score. Both sides put the go-ahead run on third in the eighth, but neither team could scratch the run across. The game was called in the top of the ninth to due darkness and rain.
