MONTCLAIR, N.J. (April 2, 2019) – Sophomore
Nate Peacock tallied three RBI's, but the FDU-Florham baseball team fell to Montclair State University 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Devils drop to 8-13 on the season, while the Red Hawks improve to 10-8.
Sophomore
Joseph Kastner earned the start for the Devils and after surrendering a leadoff double in first, settled down to set down the next three hitters. Montclair broke through with a run in the bottom second, scoring on an RBI double to left center field. FDU took the lead in fourth, scoring twice. Freshman
Tyler McCulloch lined a first-pitch single to center before junior
Kevin Smiegocki walked. With two outs, Peacock liked the first pitch he saw, doubling in both runners with a shot down the left field line.
MSU leveled the game in the home half of the fourth, scoring on a fielder's choice. The Red Hawks regained the lead with a pair of tallies in the fifth, the second coming with two outs. The Devils battled back, once again pulling even in the sixth. Sophomore
Matt Nodoro led off with a walk before McCulloch singled to center. A wild pitch moved each runner up, and Peacock plated Nodoro with a single to center. The next hitter, freshman
Bobby Hefferon, reached on an error to score McCulloch to make the score 4-4.
Montclair loaded the bases in the sixth, but senior
Brad Norris induced a pop-fly to left field to end the inning without any runs scoring. The senior needed just eight pitches to retire the side in the seventh, and senior
Will Lapham forced an inning-ending 5-3 double play to close out the eighth.
After the Devils went down 1-2-3 in the ninth, the Red Hawks broke through for the final run in the bottom of the ninth frame. With runners on second and third, sophomore
Matthew Godlewski was able to retire the first batter he faced with a pop-up in the infield. After an intentional walk, the Red Hawks came through with the walk-off, a sacrifice fly to right field to end the game.
