DALLAS, Pa. (March 31, 2019) – The FDU-Florham softball team was swept 8-0 and 12-0 by host Misericordia in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom play Sunday.
The Devils drop to 2-4 within the MAC Freedom, with the Cougars remain perfect at 6-0 in the conference.
GAME 1: Misericordia 8, FDU-Florham 0
FDU's leadoff batter
Gabby Young opened the contest with a single up the middle, but after a sacrifice bunt by junior
Annamarie Santangelo, Young was thrown out trying to take the extra base. Misericordia wasted little time getting on the board, hitting a home run with the leadoff hitter.
Freshman
Emma Gaffney walked to lead off the second before sophomore
Francesca Shipe laced a one-out single to left field. FDU was unable to capitalize, as Gaffney was caught stealing while a foul out ended the inning. The hosts doubled their lead in the second with a solo home run, but rookie
Ciara Hoffman set the Cougars down 1-2-3 in the third frame.
The Cougars extended the gap in the fourth, putting four runs on six hits. The big blow was a three-run home run to centerfield. Sophomore
Abbey Scarengelli entered with no outs in the fourth and prevented any further damage in the inning. Scarengelli was able to get a strikeout and a pair of groundouts to close out the inning.
Senior
Courtney Rohde notched a one-out double to right center in the fifth but remained stranded as the next two batters grounded out. Misericordia closed out the contest with two final tallies in the fifth, as the last run came around to score on a single to left field.
GAME 2: Misericordia 12, FDU-Florham 0
Both sides went down in order in the first frame, before the Devils were able to put the first runner on base in the second. Rohde was hit by a pitch before Shipe reached on a fielder's choice to force out Rohde. Shipe advanced a base on a wild pitch, but couldn't cross home plate.
The Cougars exploded for nine runs and eight hits in the second stanza, with six of the runs coming with none out. Misericordia closed on their scoring in the third, tacking on the final three runs of the game.
The Devils put a runner on base in the fourth, as freshman
Dana Giardina reached on an error. Misericordia ended the game as the Devils went down 1-2-3 in the fifth, as the Cougar pitcher tossed a no-hitter while allowing just two base-runners.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Gaffney reached base in both of her plate appearances in game one, drawing a walk both times.
• Hoffman and Scarengelli each recorded a strikeout in the opener.
• Shipe and Rohde were the only two Devils to reach base in both games.
