FLEMINGTON, N.J. (March 17, 2019) – The FDU-Florham baseball scored their most runs in a game since 2005 en route a 23-3 win in the second of a doubleheader against Delaware Valley University Sunday afternoon.
The Devils, who dropped the first game 6-2, sit at 5-6 on the season. Both teams are 1-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom.
GAME 1: Delaware Valley 6, FDU-Florham 2
The Aggies wasted little time getting runs across, scoring three times in their first at-bat. Delaware Valley could've tacked on more, but senior
Brad Norris was able to coax a groundout with the bases loaded to end the frame. Norris put runs on first and second with two down in the second, but freshman
Tyler McCulloch made a nice running grab close the inning out.
Freshman
Kyle Nepton entered in relief in the third and set the Aggies down in order. The Devils cut the deficit down to one in the third, scoring twice. Sophomore
Joe Moskowitz led off with a walk and came around to score on a long double to left-center by freshman
Michael Dell'Unto. Dell'Unto moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior
Jake Alercio before touching home on an RBI double from sophomore
Nate Peacock.
The Aggies got a run back in the fourth without a hit, scoring on two walks and an RBI groundout. Nepton set the visitors down in order in the fifth, and the Devils had a chance to tie the game. Dell'Unto led off with a single through the box, and a Peacock single put runners on first and second with one out. FDU was unable to capitalize, as the next two hitters were retired.
Delaware Valley added two more tallies in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead, but the Devils threatened in their final at-bat in the seventh. With one down, junior
Billy Podurgiel singled up the middle and advanced to third on a double by junior
Kevin Smiegocki. A walk to junior
Jonathan Biale loaded the bases and brought the tying run to the dish. A called third strike would end up preventing the Devils from scoring and closed out the game.
GAME 2: FDU-Florham 23, Delaware Valley 3
The Devils bats came alive to the second contest, as the team pounded out 19 hits and capitalized on nine Aggie miscues in the field. The team was able to push across at least four runs in four different frames.
The Aggies looked to strike first, but senior
Kevin Brown escaped without allowing a run thanks to a force out at third base to end the first. The Devils scored four times in the opening inning, all coming with two outs. Peacock and senior
Ian Havran singled before junior
Michael Tufano walked to load the bases. McCulloch hit a ground ball to second which looked to be the third out, but the rookie eluded the tag after a poor throw, scoring Peacock. Moskowitz moved the line with a walk before Dell'Unto reached on an error which allowed the final two runs to score.
The Aggies got a run in the second before the Devils exploded for eight runs and seven hits while 13 men to plate in the third. McCulloch hit a home run to right center with the ball just hitting the mesh netting in the outfield at Diamond Nation. Peacock, Smiegocki and sophomore
Matt Nodoro all had RBI hits with two outs before Tufano cranked a long home run to left field to cap off the scoring for the frame.
Brown set down four straight bridging the third and fourth before the Aggies put two men on base after a walk and a single. The senior finished off the inning without allowing a run, getting the final out via a called third strike. The Devils loaded the bases in the fourth with no outs before Havran moved everyone up a base with a single. Nodoro drove in a run with a walk before Tufano smacked a liner off the pitcher for an infield single. McCulloch and Moskowitz capped the inning off with run-scoring outs.
Delaware Valley tallied a run in the fifth before Brown closed out his day with a perfect sixth inning. The senior ended his afternoon by the last hitters out with strikeouts. FDU capped off the day with a six spot in the sixth inning. Sophomore
Hakim Hamer delivered a pinch-hit RBI single before Peacock dropped a run-scoring single into right-center field. Nodoro and Tufano went back-to-back with two-run doubles, as the team sent 10 batters in the plate in the inning.
