Women's Soccer Season Comes to End in ECAC Quarterfinal; Loses 3-2 in Extra Time

Box Score Springfield, Mass (November 17, 2019)- On Sunday, the Women's Soccer season came to an end in the ECAC Quarterfinal after a 3-2 double overtime defeat against tournament host, Springfield College. With the defeat, the Devils season comes an end, while the Pride moves on to the semi-final round.

First Half
The Pride controlled the pace early, scoring the game's first goal three minutes into the match.  FDU would pick up their play, and in the 39th minute, broke through. Junior Stephanie Corea streaked down the right side of the field, beating the Pride goalkeeper low left side, to tie the game, 1-1.  The game would remain tied into the halftime break.
 
The Devils finished the half with 7 total shots and 4 on goal, led by Junior Nathalia Gallo with 3 total and 2 on goal. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Paulino made four saves in the half.
 
Second Half
Back and forth action defined the first 15 minutes of half number two. Springfield took a 2-1 advantage in the 60th minute when Swetland scored her second of the game. Less than four minutes later, the Devils would get fouled in the box and were awarded a penalty kick. Gallo capitalized to tie the game at two. The teams traded opportunities through the remainder of the half, ending regulation 2-2 , headed to overtime.
 
Overtime
The first 10 minutes of overtime saw back and forth action with the Devils getting the best opportunity in the final 10 seconds. Gallo's corner kick bounced around in the box before Junior Erica Martins got her foot on the ball. The Prides back line stopped the ball before crossing the line, ending the first extra period. Late in the second overtime frame, Springfield was able to score, pushing the ball past Paulino for the game clinching goal. The final score, 3-2.

63:44- FDU penalty kick goal scored by Gallo, her third of the season.

Brick Wall
Paulino faced 17 total shots on the day, finishing the game with 11, including 5 in extra time.  
 
Attack
FDU's offense finished the day with 17 total shots and 9 on goal. Junior's Gallo, Amanda Croce and Madeline Finnegan led the way with 4, 3 and 3 respectively.
 
The Season
The Devils season ends with a final record of 13-8-1. This is the third straight season finishing with 13 or more wins and fifth straight season participating in postseason play.

"I thought we played extremely well after making some critical adjustments at halftime. Our competitiveness was never a question in this match. I am proud of this group for coming together this weekend and really playing some great soccer. This team had another fantastic year and we've shown all season that we can compete with anyone. I congratulate our two amazing seniors and am happy they had a chance to experience postseason play in each of their four seasons together".
