WILKES-BARRE. PA. (January 12, 2018) – The FDU-Florham women's basketball team was knocked off by host King's College 94-83 Saturday afternoon.
The Devils drop to 1-3 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom and sit 6-9 overall. King's improves to 7-7 overall, and 2-2 in the MAC Freedom.
The hosts notched the first four points of the contest before senior
Kayla Croswell converted back-to-back baskets, the second coming off an offensive rebound. After a triple by senior
Raven Dowling gave FDU an 8-6 edge, King's responded with a 9-0 spurt which was ended by a jumper from freshman
Arian Coleman.
Heading into the second down five, the Devils committed just one turnover during 10 minute stretch while forcing four of their own. The Monarchs stretched the lead to double-digits early in the period, but Croswell scored the layup, drew a foul and sunk the free throw to cut the lead back in half.
The two sides traded baskets, but FDU responded with an 8-0 run to push in front 27-26 on a fast-break jumper from junior
Jennah Roman. Junior
Breion Knox tallied the final basket of the first half, putting back a rebound that she pulled down to level the game at 35.
The Devils opened the scoring in the third period, with Roman canning a trey off a Dowling feed. With FDU up 40-37, King's tallied the next 10 points, leading to a 30 second timeout. The guests did not go down quietly, as the registered seven of the next 10 markers, finishing the rally off with a Croswell layup. The senior brought the deficit down to three late in the period, but King's notched the last three points to enter the final stanza clinging to a six point edge.
With 8:45 left in the fourth, Croswell forced a turnover and raced in for a layup to trim the Monarch lead down to just one point. The Connecticut native sunk two from the charity stripe to FDU a 62-61 lead 17 seconds later but the hosts were able to connect on the next four points to once again propel in front.
Freshman
Helen Ishmael hit the front end of two free throws to once again level the game at 65, but the hosts scored the next nine points to take the lead for good. Knox converted a jumper off a steal with 4:58 remaining in the fourth, but the Devils were unable to get any closer.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The back-and-forth tilt featured six ties and seven lead changes.
- The Devils put five players in double figures for the first time this season.
- Croswell led the Devils with 24 points, her eighth game with 20 or more points this season.
- Knox had a career-best 12 points off the bench, and led the team with five rebounds.
