Women's Lacrosse Cruises Into MAC Freedom Championship

MADISON, N.J. (May 2, 2018) - The FDU women's lacrosse team cruised into the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship game with a 19-5 victory over Eastern Wednesday.

The Devils won their 10th straight contest, improving to 14-4 on the season. FDU looks for its fourth consecutive MAC Freedom Championship on Saturday, when they host No. 2 seed Misericordia on Saturday afternoon at a time to be determined.

Junior Caitlyn Damon opened the scoring just 1:27 in, as the Devils netted the first six tallies of the game. During the run, Damon added a second while junior Kathleen Petrucelli added a pair.

After the Eagles broke their scoreless drought, graduate student Noelle Shirey scored her second of the afternoon just 17 seconds after the Eastern goal. Damon completed her hat trick off a feed from sophomore Madison Wood, and two minutes later classmate Aliyha Elk converted a free-position goal stretching the lead to seven.

The Elk tally kick-started four straight goals to end the first, capped off with a free-position conversion with 1:35 remaining in the stanza. FDU held a 21-5 edge in shots while holding an 11-4 edge in draw controls.

The Eagles netted the first two markers of the second half, trimming the gap to eight with 28:20 remaining.Freshman Olivia Chaoush stopped the run, with Damon picking up a helper on the goal. The Chaoush tally helped the team score the next seven goals before Eastern scored the final goal with 53 seconds remaining.

Damon finished with four goals and an assist to lead seven players with multiple goals. Freshman Nina Shirey tied the school-record with seven caused turnovers, including several straight interceptions that she took the other way.
