Women's Lacrosse Smothers Eastern, 20-5

MADISON, N.J. (April 25, 2018) - The FDU women's lacrosse team scored 15 first-half goals en route to a 20-5 win over Eastern Wednesday evening.

The Devils improve to 12-4 on the season, including a 6-0 mark in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom. Eastern drops to 6-7, and 4-2 in the MAC Freedom. With the victory, FDU clinched a home playoff game and can finish no worse than the No. 2 seed in the MAC Freedom Championship next week.

FDU opened the scoring 2:39 into the game, as junior Kathleen Petrucelli netted her first of the night. Off the ensuing draw control, graduate student Noelle Shirey corralled the draw and ripped a shot high. The Devils regained possession, and freshman Olivia Chaoush deposited a goal, her 11th of the year.

Chaoush added to the lead off a feed from Shirey, and the Devils went on a three-goal in 84 second scoring spree, extending the lead to 6-0. Petrucelli netted two tallies in just over a minute as the lead swelled to eight.

Midway through the first stanza, Shirey scored off a Petrucelli pass to push the lead up to 12. With just 54 seconds remaining in the half, senior Samantha Holleritter closed out first half scoring, sending the team into the half up 15-0.

FDU dominated the opening half, holding a 25-4 edge in shots and a 12-3 advantage in draw controls.

The teams traded goals opening the second half, as Holleritter and junior Caitlyn Damon recorded goals for the Devils. Eastern netted three of the next five goals, before freshman Hannah Bhend closed out the scoring with just over a minute remaining.

Damon led the way with four goals, while Holleritter, Chaoush, Petrucelli and junior Caroline Pape each netted three. Petrucelli also added four assists, while Pape caused four turnovers. Juniors Megan Nemeth and Erin Gill each made three saves, with each playing 30 minutes in net.

The Devils will host Misericordia on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Robert T. Shields Field. Not only will it be Senior Day, but will determine the No. 1 seed in the MAC Freedom Championship.
