MADISON, N.J (April 17, 2018) - The FDU softball team was knocked off 5-3 and 9-2 by the Stevens Institute of Technology Tuesday afternoon.
The Devils fall to 13-15 on the season, as Stevens improves to 17-7.
GAME 1: Stevens 5, FDU-Florham 3
After a 1-2-3 first inning from freshman
Abbey Scarengelli, FDU scored runs in their first at-bat. Sophomore
Gabby Young worked a four pitch walk and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Ducks centerfielder. Senior
Taylor Torre dumped a single into right, scoring Young. Classmate
Michelle Mangini notched an infield single before junior
Courtney Rohde doubled to left center, scoring both.
Scarengelli loaded the bases in the second, but escaped without giving up a run. A fielders choice and a strikeout looking helped the rookie end the inning. Sophomore
Tara Morash doubled with down in the first and moved to third on a sac bunt. Morash was stranded as a flyout ended the inning.
The Ducks evened the game in the fifth, as Corinne Loncar delivered a bases-clearing double to make the score 3-3. FDU had a chance to regain the lead in the sixth. Senior
Frannie Jarin singled and Morash notched an infield hit. The Devils were unable to capitalize, as a fielders choice ended the inning.
Heading into extra innings, Stevens took the lead, scoring twice. The big hit was a single back up the middle. FDU was unable to score, going down 1-2-3 in the eighth.
Torre was 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while Rohde and Morash each notched two hits.
GAME 2: Stevens 9, FDU-Florham 2 (5 innings - Game called due to darkness)
The first two innings went by scoreless, but the visiting Ducks notched five runs in the third. All of the runs in the frame were unearned as a two-out error prolonged the inning.
The Ducks tacked on five runs in the fourth, the big blow being a three-run home run to left from Katherine Tirabassi. Stevens closed out the scoring with a bloop single down the left field line, making the scoreline 9-0 after the top of the fifth.
In their final at-bat, freshman
Hunter Ruppel led off getting hit with a pitch. Sophomore
Kaylee Fish singled over the second base bag, while freshman
Nicole Casale walked to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Ruppel while sophomore
Annamarie Santangelo singled in Fish. That would be as close as FDU would get, as the following three hitters were retired.
Sophomore
Megan Zaccario struck out three hitters in her 1 1/3 innings of relief.
FDU is back in action on Thursday, hosting Hunter at 3 p.m.
