Baseball Upended by Manhattanville, 10-3

PURCHASE, N.Y. (March 30, 2018) - The FDU baseball team was upended by Manhattanville 10-3 Friday afternoon.

The Devils drop to 5-9 on the season, while Manhattanville moved to 5-7. The two sides will meet tomorrow in a doubleheader at FDU Baseball Field beginning at 1 p.m.

The Valiants started the scoring early, tallying three runs in the first inning. FDU had two -runners on base with no outs in the second looking to cut into the lead, but were unable to score. The hosts added to their lead with single runs in the second and third, grabbing a 5-0 edge after three frames.

The Devils loaded the bases on consecutive singles by senior Christopher Franco and sophomore AJ Yurista along with a hit by pitch to David Wilbur. After a pitching change, the Valiants escaped trouble by getting a double-play grounder. FDU senior Brad Norris settled down, pitching a scoreless fourth and fifth.

FDU finally broke through in the sixth. Senior Reynaldo Diaz led off with a single, while Franco and Yurista also reached with no outs. Senior Joseph Bonaccorso ended the shutout with a single to left, and Wilbur reached on an error allowing another run to score. Junior Kevin Smiegocki knocked in another run with a fielder's choice, but another double-play prevented further damage.

The Valiants tacked on three additional runs in the sixth and additional tallies in the seventh and eighth. Diaz singled in the ninth to extend the game, but the Devils were unable to do anymore damage.

Yurista collected three hits in a 3-for-4 outing, while Diaz had two knocks.
