Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Strong First Half Leads Women's Lacrosse to 13-8 Win Over Vassar

MADISON, N.J. (March 29, 2018) - The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham women's lacrosse team scored 12 first half goals en route to a 13-8 win over Vassar Thursday.

FDU improved to 4-3 with the win, while Vassar dropped to 2-4.

Senior Cassidy Vastano opened the scoring 2:38 into the game, converting a pass from junior Kathleen Petrucelli. After Vassar tied the score with 23:45 left in the half, graduate student Noelle Shirey scored off a nice pass from senior Samantha Holleritter. The lead was short-lived, as the Brewers evened the game at two 25 seconds after the Shirey tally.

Junior Caitlyn Damon put the Devils back on top for good, while classmate Caroline Pape doubled the lead with a free-position tally at the 20:12 mark. After the Brewers answered back with a goal, Shirey responded 19 seconds later.

The Shirey tally got the Devils going, as the team scored the next eight goals of the half. Petrucelli netted a pair during the run, while Damon, Pape, Holleritter and freshman Olivia Chaoush also added goals.

FDU held a 22-10 edge in shots during the first 30 minutes of play, while also holding an 18-7 lead in ground balls.

The Brewers broke the run 2:26 into the second half, but neither side could anymore damage for much of the period. Playing in a fog that was rolling through Robert T. Shields Field for much of the second stanza, the teams played the next 15 minutes without a goal.

Shirey ended the drought, to close out the FDU scoring with 12:42 remaining in the second half. Vassar scored four times over the final 8:41 to make things interesting, but were unable to fully close the gap.

Shirey totaled four goals and an assist with six caused turnovers, while Pape had five draw controls and six ground balls. Damon fired eight shots, as junior Megan Nemeth made five saves in the victory.

FDU is back in action on Tuesday, welcoming Montclair State for a 4 p.m. contest.
