Baseball Knocked Off by Olivet, 7-6

AUBURNDALE. Fla. (March 15, 2018) - The FDU baseball team closed out its Florida trip falling to Olivet 7-6 Thursday.

The Devils dropped to 4-6 on the season.

FDU jumped on the Comets starter in the first inning, as Nate Peacock and Reynaldo Diaz notched back-to-back walks. After an out, sophomore AJ Yurista and senior Joseph Bonaccorso rapped consecutive singles, putting the Devils ahead 2-0.

Sophomore Steven Riley started, and surrendered three runs in the home half of the first, squandering the lead. Riley did get out of the inning by the pitcher's best friend, a well-turned double-play. The Comets tacked a run in the second and a pair in the third, leading 6-2 after three. Senior Walter Pennett entered in the fourth and retired the side in order, getting a strikeout on the second batter he faced.

That perfect frame was what the Devils ordered, as they responded with four tallies in the top of the fifth. Senior Nick DeAngelis Jr. led off with a single and scored on a Diaz double. Diaz scored on an error, while Bonaccorso had an RBI single of his own. Senior David Wilbur continued the scoring, driving in Bonoaccorso with a single.

The Comets regained the lead with an unearned tally in the bottom of the fifth. FDU put the tying run on second in the seventh and on first in the eighth, but were unable to push the run across. The Devils had one final at bat to tie things in ninth after a Diaz leadoff single, but they could not get the run they needed.

Diaz went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Peacock also scored twice. In three innings of work, Pennett fanned four while allowing two hits.
