MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham women's basketball team used a 40-point second half to defeat Middle Atlantic Conference rival DeSales University, 72-60, on Saturday afternoon at the Ferguson Recreation Center.
The Devils move to 15-6 on the season and 8-2 in the MAC Freedom as the Bulldogs dropped to 11-10 and 6-4 in the conference.
Junior
Bria Smith dominated the court, grabbing a double-double in the first half with 13 rebounds and 13 points. She continued to steam roll throughout the remainder of the contest, finishing with 24 points and 16 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass and four steals.
Both squads battled all game long as the Bulldogs left half time with a one-point edge. DeSales managed to hold leading scorer
Kendrea Williams to just two points in the first half, but the duo of Smith and sophomore
Gabrielle Harris made up the difference, scoring 24 points each as Harris added eight rebounds and three steals.
The Devils adjusted at half time and Williams found a way to break through, notching 12 points and going 4-4 from the charity stripe.
Free throws made a difference in the contest as the Devils made 20 of 25 but DeSales was only able to earn six.
Smith opened the second half with a layup just 10 seconds in despite being fouled, and made a good free throw. Morgan Birmelin tied the game up for the last time until a jumper from Harris and a steal and good layup from junior
Raven Dowling put the Devils up for the remainder of the match.
FDU used a 7-0 with 2:10 left in the third quarter to widen their lead to 11 points. The third quarter was pivotal for the Devils, as they outscored their opponent, 25-12.
