Women's Lacrosse Knocked Off by No.7 Gettsyburg in NCAA Second Round

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (May 14, 2017) – The FDU women's lacrosse team fell in the NCAA Tournament Second Round 13-5 to No. 7 Gettsyburg College Sunday.

The Bullets advance to the NCAA Third Round, taking on winner of Rhodes College and Illinois Wesleyan next Saturday. FDU ends its season at 17-4, tying the program record for wins in a season.

After the teams traded turnovers to open the game, Gettysburg opened the scoring 4:11 into the contest. Just over a minute later, senior Brienna Reasoner took a pass from classmate Frances Maggio to even the score. After Reasoner forced a turnover, she raced up field and found Maggio who drew a foul inside the free position area. The senior converted the free position attempt for her 36th goal of the season.

The Bullets looked to tie the game with 14:36 left in the first half, but sophomore Megan Nemeth came up with a huge save on a shot from in close. A successful Devils clear led to junior Cassidy Vastano finding Reasoner who bounced a shot past the Bullets keeper. With a shade over 13 minutes remaining, Gettsyburg's Katie Landry took advantage of a free position shot to cut the gap to within one.

The goal led Gettysburg to four straight tallies, including two 10 seconds apart giving the hosts a 5-3 lead heading into the half. On the fifth goal, the Devils had things well covered, but Maggie Welsh converted a shot while falling down.

The Devils broke their scoreless drought as Reasoner completed her hat trick with 25:22 left in the seconde period, deflecting in a pass from fellow senior Joelle Manganella. The Bullets broke the game open in after that, scoring eight consecutive tallies before Manganella broke the run with her second of the afternoon.

Nemeth made 13 saves, while senior Noelle Shirey had four ground balls and three caused turnovers. The Bullets held a large edge in draw controls, winning 17 to the FDU's three.
