MADISON, N.J. (April 8, 2017) - In a game that saw 27 runs, 40 hits and 11 errors, the FDU baseball team dropped a 16-11 11 inning affair against Eastern.
Eastern scored three times in the first and once in the second before junior
Reynaldo Diaz homered to lead off the third inning. The Eagles responded with a run in the fourth, as FDU answered with a three-spot in the home fourth. Senior
Nick DeAngelis Jr. had an RBI single, and two batters later junior
Christopher Franco dropped a single into the Bermuda Triangle in short right. Diaz was running hard scored all the way from first on the play.
Eastern chased FDU starter
Kenny Carrier with a four run fifth inning, bringing in
Matt Zingaro. Zingaro saved the bullpen arms, giving the Devils 4 2/3 innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) while striking out five. FDU snipped away at the lead, scoring one run in the fifth on a single by
Joseph Bonaccorso.
Franco narrowly missed a three-run home run down the left field line by mere inches, settling for an RBI double. Productive outs by
Bryan Pieschel and
Ben Thompson cut the gap to a run at 9-8 heading into the eighth. Bonaccorso hit a wind-aided triple to right field to tie the game in the eighth, but were unable to push the go-ahead run across.
After a scoreless ninth, Eastern scored twice in the 10th on a single by Bryan DiGiacomo. With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, DeAngelis reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Diaz singled home two runs to tie the game, but couldn't find the final tally. Eastern would score five times in the 11th to conclude the wild game.
Junior
Garrett Ruoff and Franco had three hits while Diaz and Franco each knocked in three runs each.
