Women's Basketball Bows Out of NCAA Tournament

MADISON, N.J. (March 4, 2017) – The FDU women's basketball team lost a 62-61 overtime heartbreaker to Babson in the NCAA Tournament Second Round Saturday.

The Devils conclude their season at 25-4 while Babson improved to 24-5, moving on to face the winner of Amherst and Mary Washington.

The game did not start well for the Devils, surrendering the opening six points of the game. After Taylor Russell jumper gave the Beavers a 12-9 lead, the Devils stormed back with four straight to take their first lead of the evening. Freshman Kendrea Williams scored five straight in the second quarter to tie the game at 23, but Babson went on 17-4 run to close out the half and head into break up 13.

FDU opened up the third quarter on a 6-0 run to get within single-digits, but the Beavers managed to keep the Devils at bay. The Devils limited Babson to three points over the final 4:18 of the third, and senior Alyssa McDonough scored the final five tallies to cut the deficit to a three points heading into the fourth.

Williams drained five consecutive from the charity stripe to give the Devils their first lead since the first quarter. A layup by Jacqueline Jozefick put Babson up one with 2:34 left, but McDonough hit a free throw to tie things up 16 seconds later. Both sides had chances to grab the win in regulation, but neither side was able to convert.

The teams went over four minutes without scoring points in the extra session, before senior Rachel Groom hit two from the free throw line. Jozefick hit one of her own free throw line with 46 seconds left trimming the deficit to one. After the Beavers forced a turnover, senior Giovanna Pickering found Jozefick under the basket for the game-winning layup. FDU had one chance for the win, but the attempt was off the mark.

Williams led all scorers with 27 while McDonough finished her career with 17 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Groom also narrowly missed a double-double, settling for 10 points and nine rebounds.
