MADISON, N.J. (March 29, 2017) - Senior
Brienna Reasoner of the FDU women's lacrosse team became the new program leader in ground balls, but the Devils fell to Kean 9-8 Wednesday.
The Devils drop to 5-2 on the season, while Kean improved to 7-2.
It was the senior Reasoner who opened the scoring for FDU, tallying her first of three goals nearly 10 minutes into the game. Kean answered back with a free position tally 1:08 later, the first of three consecutive Cougar tallies. Senior
Joelle Manganella stopped the run off a feed from classmate
Laura Cannillo, but Kean scored the next four markers, sending FDU into a timeout.
The timeout paid-off for the Devils, as Manganella and sophomore
Caitlyn Damon netted goals 28 seconds apart at the end of the first half, trimming the deficit to three heading into the break. Senior
Frances Maggio converted a free position attempt on the Devils second shot of the second half to get the squad within a pair.
An outstanding individual effort by sophomore
Caroline Pape resulted in her first tally of the season, as she weaved through defenders before ripping a shot past the keeper. The Devils tied it on Reasoner's second of the afternoon, but the tie was short-lived, as Kean regained the lead 15 seconds later. Reasoner completed her hat-trick with 17:31 remaining, rebounding her own missed attempt.
Both sides looked to break the deadlock over the next 17 minutes, with sophomore
Megan Nemeth and Cougar keeper Nikki Apostolopoulos making several saves in key spots. An offensive foul on FDU turned the ball over, setting the stage for Kean to score a free-position goal with five seconds remaining to give the visitors the victory.
Reasoner now has 193 career ground balls after grabbing five today, breaking the previous record held by Abby Hildebrand. The senior also had three draw controls and two caused turnovers. Nemeth made eight saves.
FDU will be back in action on Saturday, taking on Montclair State at 1 p.m.
