MADISON, N.J. (November 15, 2017) - Sophomore Gabrielle Harris scored 25 points to lead four players in double figures as the FDU women's basketball team topped Rutgers Newark 84-70 Wednesday night.
With the victory, the Devils move to 7-3 all-time against the Scarlet Raiders, including victories in each of the past two seasons.
Things didn't start off well for the Devils, as Rutgers Newark tallied the first seven points of the game. A layup by junior Bria Smith cut the visitors lead to five as the first quarter came to a close. The Devils grabbed their first lead of the game with 7:52 left in the second quarter, as Harris converted a fast-break layup.
FDU nabbed it's largest lead of the first half on a
Kendrea Williams layup, with 1:31 left stretching the lead to six. The guests would cut the lead in half on a free throw and layup with 22 seconds left but had a chance to get within one at the buzzer. The attempt was swatted away by senior
Michaela Piserchia. The Devils limited Rutgers Newark to 34.3% shooting, and forced 13 first half turnovers.
The Devils used a 12-0 run in the third quarter to push the lead into double figures, capped off with a three-point play from Williams. The Scarlet Raiders closed the frame out with seven of the final 11 points, and trailed by just nine heading into the fourth and final quarter.
Piserchia had a streal in the defensive end and went coast-to-coast with the layup, pushing the Devils lead to five with just over five minutes left. The guests whittled down the Devils lead to just one point with 3:51 left in the contest. Williams and Harris would take the game over, scoring the next 11 points during an 11-0 spurt. The Devils nailed their free-throws down the stretch, as sophomore
Cayla Staggers, Harris and Williams all sunk tries from the charity stripe.
Piserchia filled the stat-sheet, putting up eight points, five rebounds, four blocks and a pair of steals. In her game as a Devil, Harris had a double-double with 10 rebounds to along with the 25 points. Staggers chipped in 12 points off the bench, while Smith had 10 points, six rebounds and four steals.
The Devils shot a blistering 62.07% in the second half, including a 4-of-7 from three.
