Softball's Valiant ECAC Tournament Run Ends in Championship Game

GALLOWAY, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham exploded for an 18-1 victory over Stockton University before falling 7-5 in the ECAC Metro Championship Game to New York University on Sunday afternoon.

The loss marks the end of a successful campaign for the Devils (21-17), who made a valiant push to earn a spot in the tournament's finals after losing their first game of the weekend.

FDU-Florham saw several record-setting performances over the weekend led by senior second baseman Nikki Caruso. Caruso's final campaign in Madison saw her amass single-season records with a .480 batting average, 59 hits and 42 runs. Additionally, her 43 RBI and 10 home runs also rank second in the program's single-season history. In just three seasons, the senior second baseman ranks in the top five in most offensive categories. Her career .430 batting average and 18 home runs are the third most all time, while she tops the Devils in doubles with 37 and ranks fifth in hits (151) and RBI (96).

Senior catcher Wynne McCann closes her illustrious career as the team's all-time leader with 33 home runs and 129 RBI. This season McCann clocked 50 hits, which is fourth most in a season to go along with eight home runs and 37 RBI, which all rank in the top five.

Sydney Worek capped a busy season in which she tossed the fourth most innings in school history with 153.1, while tallying 16 wins and 157 strikeouts.  All-time, Worek ranks third in wins (42), appearances (91), and innings (486.6) and fifth in strikeouts (398).

Additionally, sophomore center fielder Marlena Bevilacqua broke the school record for stolen bases with 36 and at bats with 141. Her 53 hits are the second most in a single-season and she already ranks second all-time in steals with 56.

Game 1 (FDU-Florham 18, Stockton 1)
Facing the top-seed in the tournament for the second time in as many days, the Devils avenged their opening game loss by pounding out 18 runs on 17 hits in a rout of the host Ospreys (32-13).

Worek pitched the full five innings allowing just one run on two hits, while striking out a pair. The senior right-handers victory improved her record to 16-6 on the season.

Big offensive performances were aplenty for the Devils, who received contributions from up and down the lineup. Caruso, Michelle Mangini and Paige Lillie each tallied three hits, while McCann,  Bevilacqua, and Torre netted two apiece.

The Devils jumped all over Stockton starter Samantha Shockey by scoring five first-inning runs, highlighted by Courtney Rohde's two-run blast. Shockey was unable to make it through the first inning and retired one batter before giving way to the Ospreys' bullpen.

In the second inning, Torre knocked in a run with a single before the Devils stretched their lead on a bases-loaded walk by Rohde.

Leading 7-0 in the fourth, the Devils broke the game wide open with seven more runs, bookended by a solo blast and a run-scoring double by Caruso.

The Devils finalized the run-rule victory in grand fashion as Mangini deposited a walk-off grand slam.

Game 2 (FDU-Florham 5, NYU 7)
In the championship game, the Devils squared off against the Violets (26-15) for the third time this season.

The teams traded blows over the first few innings before the Violets used a three-run, sixth inning to move in front for good and seal their first-ever postseason tournament victory.

NYU netted one run in the first and saw a potential second runner cut down at the plate on a great relay throw by FDU-Florham right fielder Jacquelyn Tartaglia. In addition to her outstanding defensive play, Tartaglia chipped in a 1-for-3 day at the dish with one run scored.

A solo blast by Rebecca DeCarlo in the top of the third pulled the Devils even at 1-1 before the Violets regained the lead when Diana King launched a solo homer of her own.

Still trailing 2-1 in the top of the fifth, the Devils' offense went back to work with a big inning. Rohde crushed a homer over the left field fence. Later in the frame, Bevilacqua delivered a two-run triple and then scored on a base knock by Lillie.

Unfortunately, the Devils were unable to protect their 5-2 lead as NYU's Claire Stefanelli cut the deficit to one with a single in the fifth before the Violets took the lead for good in the sixth. Allyson Schmus sent a solo shot over the left field fence to tie the game and then Ashley Mains plated a pair with a two-out single to center.

Despite an error by the Violets and a single by Bevilacqua, the Devils were unable to scratch across the tying runs as NYU held on for the win.
Bevilacqua closed her 2016 campaign with a 3-for-4 effort, including the two RBI and a run scored.

King earned the win for the Violets by pitching 2.2 scoreless innings in relief.
